STAGE 10 TRACKING

STAGE 10: CALAMA > SALTA

Connection 501km | Special Stage 359km | Total 860km

COURSE OVERVIEW

The motorcyclists and quad bikers will set off for their second marathon stage! After the Chile-Argentina border, this time the day’s special stage will start on the Salinas Grandes, more than 3,600m above sea level. The altitude should curb the competitors’ enthusiasm and cool down their engines. The more technical final phase will separate the toughest of them from the rest. For the liaison section, the route will then follow the Paso de l’Acay, at an altitude of 4,970m.

The GREEN section of the route is the connection , the RED is the Special Section of the stage.

They have 14 miles of tarmac starting at Cp1 right when they get to it at what looks like a narrow point. Maybe a road or bridge crossing it or some such?

I've been absent a lot this year, life getting in the way and all that rubbish. I have a question that I understand some of already, the diesels make more power at altitude because of forced induction? The gas engines lose power because of thinner air that is being sucked into the engine and not compressed and forced in. At sea level the V*'s make more power than their turbo diesel counter parts so the ASO requires restrictor plate's on the V8's to level the playing field since most of the rallye is not run at altitude.I've missed a lot but it seems RG is not running the kind of speeds he was 3 years ago with the Hummers I know there have been problems, the brake fire, waiting hours for a tow in, low oil pressure and a busted and jerry rigged heim joint. And he's only 1 and a1/3 years into development of the HST as opposed to around 5 years at that point 3 years ago with the Hummers? what all this bullshit is leading to , is there an equal compromise between the restricted engines and the forced induction crowed? The HST seems a good compromise over the Hummer in that the Hummer was a handful on the WRC style stages and Robby was walking away from the field on the fast open sections and in the dunes where tire inflation and deflation became a factor but he doesn't seem to have found that same combination in those two areas with the HST. It may just be perception but I'm curious.

not to mention I'd like to see vehicles wieghts posted plus there is I believe a further breakdown of class to consider

I do believe after reading JC's texts and Robby's highlights, a wait for tow wasn't that.... but they got stuck, had tow strap out in hopes of getting someone to give them a small jerk (in Robby's terms, it wouldn't have taken but a small pull), in the end they had to dig themselves out.

As this year's edition of the Dakar Rally is coming to its last stages I feel obliged to express my thanks to Tog for the pleasure he's given me of following the rally and the opinions of all of the participants in this forum.
I do hope that Robby and his Gordini make it to Buenos Aires. He has put a valiant effort so far and the culmination of his expertise for me was during stage 8 when he managed to reach the end of it after driving hundreds of miles with low oil pressure. What an accomplishment!!!
Robby has the speed and the Gordini has the speed and that is proven.Very valuable data have been collected already and I am sure that with Robby's expertise those data will be examined and preocessed accordingly so next year Robby and the Gordini will figure much higher in the classification.
Good luck today!!!

Another Day.
I will post very little today as I know my posts are generally not very well accepted.
Hope everyone, mainly Rob and Jonny, has a great day.

Sorry you feel that way Carl. I don't know what you've posted in the past, but as long as it's not negative, irrelevant, aggressive or derogatory, you should feel comfortable posting your thoughts.

I have no idea what you posted that was not well received?

Just enjoy the race.

I mean, someone on Planet Facebook posted that "RG lost a fan" because he finished 8th. LOL

Off to stage 10!

I bet he didn't sleep at all over that one fan! Lol it's a forum u can post what u want and some debates r educational because someone will say something that I didn't know but just like people have the right to say what they want other people have the right to rebuke whatever is said, we all need to be a little less sensitive, main point is we r hopefully all here for the same reason and that is to pull for Robby and enjoy the Dakar.

I agree with natron, you should not feel like you aren't welcome to post. Just understand, not everyone may agree with you all the time.

Originally, motorcycles/quads and cars/trucks were supposed to tackle different courses in the last part of today's special, but the cars and trucks will finally race on exactly the same 371 km route as the motorcycles and quads

Robby has done a bang up job this year with his new Gordini. We here @ the solarbugs house wish Robby all the best of whatever it takes to get him to that checkered flag! Next year I am sure the Gordini will do lots better because of all that has been learned @ the rally this year. Rubber side down Robby!

I hope we can get into the chat today. I really enjoy the people in that room! This may be my last day to watch the tracking during the race because of life ......
