I’m getting real tired of people who know nothing about performance engines HARPING about this.
Let me explain in a way most people can understand.
The connecting rod was light by 2.7 grams.
2.7 grams is about the weight of one dime
A racing engine rotating assembly is balanced to tolerances of +or- .02 grams it is preferred to have .00grams +or- . plus the balance engine parts are piston,wrist pin,rings and circlips plus .8 grams for oil.
NASCAR picks one connecting rod out of 1 engine per manufacture at random the 20 car just happened to be that car.
TO HAVE A BALANCED ENGINE EVERY ROD MUST WEIGH THE SAME!!
So if one rod was light they all were for a total of 21.7 grams letting the engine reach high revolutions faster that is not counting the pistons, rings and piston wrist pin's

My final thought on this - Until Carl Long can race again in Cup, any engine infraction needs to carry a similar penalty as his. NASCAR set the bar when they nailed him with a $200,000 fine and 12 week suspension. As much as I like Kenseth and question this penalty, it's not that outrageous when you look at what they did to Long.

Agreed! I can't wait to see a Junior or a Danica get the same treatment as Carl Long did....oh, wait...nevermind

My biggest complaint isn't really with NASCRAP itself , but with people being so surprised with nascar's INCONSISTENCY . This has been going on for yrs now and the only thing that has been consistent is nascar's inconsistency . No I don't agree with the severity of the punishment but it doesn't surprise me .

I think they are also consistent with nailing the little guys as to try and get them out of the series, though that might not be the practice currently as they are at the point of hoping to have enough cars to fill the field

the rule is they pick one engine from each manufacture at random before each race after race they weigh just one rod,piston and wrist pin after race supposed to not know who was drawn till after race

I think if you had a rod on one side that weighed more and a rod on the other side that weighed less you could offset the rotation inertia created by the crank. In theory it would make the engine run smoother. Especially if that "dime" was up on the wrist pin side of the rod. I had a vibration dampener in my Mitsubishi that was nothing more then a weight that compensated for the inherent torsional mass of the motor. when I rebuilt it I took it out to allow the little 4 cyl to spin up faster. No one rebuilds an engine without balancing it. if TRD doesn't they need to start. That may be the reason the JGR TRD motors blow up a lot. If I paid $100K to lease a motor I would expect it to be balanced. Do they weigh pistons? valves? sounds like cheating or ignorance. Both are unacceptable at that level of racing.

Here's my take...............NA$CAR want's asses in the seats. This is just a ploy to drum up business....in the end all but the $$$$ will be dropped by NA$CAR. You think "they" care about JGR.........it's my game you want to play you have to play by my rules.

NA$CAR = US GOVERNMENT

What I read was that the one connecting rod was light by about 3 grams. The report also stated that all the other 7 rods met the minimum requirement of 525 grams. Anybody who thinks this created an advantage is just plain out of it....

I'm only going to join this conversation on the platform that problems and penalties and solutions are all married to one another in the sense of cost and affordability. 200 grand to Carl Long is like a crackhead getting a million dollar funeral however the true slap on the Kenseth story is in the points. Not only does an engine builder keep close tolerances (I seen a picture of a guy using a spring type torque gauge on a wrench for a head bolt so I know it's true) keep close tolerances but a guy making 6 mil a year in equal terms has a pretty swift accountant taking any fines and making them work "for" the offender. As per the problems and penalties and solutions part...............my daughter took a Chevy impala I got her and after a week of "shake down" by yours truely ran the car about three days I'd say with the low coolant light on HOT I changed the lower intake gasket and it took care of the steam clouds out the ass end but nothing beats blown headgaskets Esp. with heads made of Al .......Problem "I was hoping it would be okay" Penalty Figure it out Solution Beer and Cigars time I don't know I just don't know.............I thought Kenseth got the post race teardown rule because of where he finished which was ???
