STAGE 8 TRACKING

STAGE 8: SALTA > SAN MIGUEL DE TUCAMAN

Connection 379km | Special Stage 470km | Total 849km

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Tucuman route will be divided into two timed sections with a variety of scenery. With hoodoos, canyons and cacti, the competitors will discover the red and green backdrop of Argentina’s most beautiful natural landscape, which will unfold for more than 150 km creating a Western atmosphere. During the second half of the timed section, which will take place in a region completely unknown to the Dakar, the contrast will be apparent on the sandy and sometimes tricky tracks. It may also be manifested through the weather conditions, if the wind is combined with the high temperatures which ravage the region. The rest day will rarely have been more deserved, in particular for the motorcyclists who will finish their marathon stage..

Neutralisatie vanwege regen kan goed drogreden van ASO zijn voor fout in roadbook. Zoveel toppers die verkeerd rijden gebeurt zelden. #Dakar

Neutralisation due to rain could very well be a bogus reason from ASO for a roadbook cock-up. That many top-riders going wrong happens rarely #Dakar

Chicherit robbed. So what were the standings at CP2? Let me guess; Nasser leading with Peterhansel only a few seconds back.

The advantage would go to Peterhansel as well as Despres. Give me a few minutes, I'am trying to think of what those two may have in common.

Minute's up.

If they stopped it at Marker 374 then Chicherit should still get the win. It also moves Robby up to 2nd and puts Nasar ahead of Peterhansel.

yup.... and I'm speechless... in a manner of speaking....

Compare these times to those at ASS to see who this would help.

The eighth stage of the Dakar Rally between Salta and San Miguel de Tucumán in Argentina on Saturday, had to be interrupted during the "special" timed auto due to severe weather, the organizer ASO announced.

Heavy rains and swollen rivers have blocked the majority of competitors on four wheels.

"The marshals are currently meeting to decide how to recognize this milestone," announced the race director David Castera to AFP .

The planned route of this stage (492 km for bikes and quads, 471 km for cars and trucks to 155 km), had already been severely cut before his departure due to inclement weather on the Salta region.

As the trucks were competing in the first part of the course, their stage was simply canceled.

In contrast, motorbikes, quads and cars were found on the second part of the "special", a distance of 183 km before arriving in San Miguel de Tucumán.

But in the afternoon the skies were unleashed. The majority of riders who led the march went narrowly over the whims of the weather and were able to make their race.

The Spaniard Joan Barreda Bort traveled the 183 km special 2 hours 7 minutes and 26 seconds, ahead of American Johnny Campbell 7 min 4 sec and Slovak Ivan Jakes 7 min 57 sec.

In contrast, a dozen cars only finished the timed course, the others being blocked by the rivers in flood.

The 8th marks the end of the first part of the 34th Dakar. Sunday is rest day Monday before resuming the race will happen in Santiago, Chile on January 19.

Where is the credibility here? Great race but ASO is out to lunch.

I'm kind of a weather guy, so hopefully we will get to see some good footage of all this. When it rains in the desert, flash floods can be a real and sudden issue. It really does sound like some of the later cars met rapidly rising "rivers" and simply found their way forward blocked.

Wouldn't surprise me if you-know-who was the first quitter though.
