Found yet another classic desert race on YouTube . This 1 is a bit different though in the fact it's in Colorado . The yr is 1987 and its features an 18 yr old Robby with a lot of the old school legends of the sport . You'll see Larry Schwacofer , Rob MacCachren , Bob Gordon , Manny Esquerra , Steve Kelley , Rod Hall , Ivan Stewart , Larry Ragland , Roger Mears , Walker Evans , Frank Vessels , Frank Arcerio , Dave Shoppe , Jack Johnson , Spencer Low , Dave Ashley and Mark & Corky McMillen . Hope you all enjoy the vid as much as I did .

I went to that race............worked for RACECO at the time. The camo class 2 car (9:20 into the video) was my boss' Dave, who owned the place at the time.

Well done MJ! Its funny looking back at the old footage and watching all the classes and the technology at that time. The limited travel in the trucks really makes me chuckle. The hp was descent, and rpm's in the big trucks was at max around 5000 at top end. Here are a couple fast facts in case you did not know. Steve Kelley in the Miller American Chevy, was one of the first teams to run a 35" tire. Up until then, the class 8's ran 33" tires on a 7 and 8" wheel. The mini trucks mostly ran a 31" tire. The class 4 of Jack Johnson created quite a controvery in the fact that it was waaay out of the class rules, yet still allowed to compete in class 4. But since Nissan was the Corporate sponsor for the series, it was slightly overlooked. But only until they had the Nissan dialed in to the point where it was finishing in the top ten and top five overall, raising an eyebrow or twelve. Rod Hall figured there was no way to compete in class 4 with the phrestoric solid axle leaf spring fron and rear limited and rough riding Dodge. That the nex season, he built a really neat class 4 using coilovers in the front with a track bar and a 4 link front end. Funny though, the truck during or after the season if I remember correctly, was deemed illegal???? Go figure!

Seeing how young Baja Bob was back then was good for a chuckle too . Lol
