Join in and discuss all the action from Stage 9 of the 2012 Dakar Rally. Robby Gordon finished 2nd in stage 8 & Nasser Al Attiyah finished 5th. Cars begin stage 9 at 7:54am/et (9:54am local). COURSE OVERVIEW

A two-part stage will keep the competitors busy who continue the climb to the north of the continent, between oceans and mountains. Two sections separated by a neutralization are on the agenda with varied features and landscapes. At the beginning of the day, the competitors will pass through canyons, drive on clean tracks and sink in the fesh fesh?! The second special stage will call upon the drivers' and co-drivers' navigational talents, who will have to make a decision based on the very limited landmarks, while remaining focused on the WPM. To reward them for this intensive endeavour, they will drive down the steep descent to Iquique, already featured on the 2010 Dakar route, to the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

15:40 Cars: Gordon and Al-Attiyah lead the Minis at CP2

With a total time of 1:19’19”, Robby Gordon has been the quickest driver at CP2 (after the first third of the special) ahead of his team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah, who nonetheless lost time when stopping briefly after 88 km. The gap between the two men is 2’29”. Following them, the first Mini is driven by Polish driver Holowczic, 22” behind the Qatari. Stephane Peterhansel, 3’19” behind the day’s quickest man, is fourth, ahead of Leal Dos Santos (4’17” behind), Roma (4’40” behind), Novitskiy (5’23” behind), De Villiers (6’48” behind) and Sousa (7’41” behind).

Didn't he have the same problem yesterday? Aren't they allowed to work on the cars between stages?

15:57 Cars: Alternator problems for Al-Attiyah?
Nasser Al-Attiyah has stopped regularly since the start of the special, on at least three occasions, losing several minutes each time. It seems that he has problems with his alternator drive belt which needs to be readjusted regularly. In spite of this, he boasted a fine second-placed time at CP2.

only six bikes hit checkpoint 3 and no cars..... will this spell trouble in the form of penalties or is there just a scoring error?

16:24 Cars: Has Nasser Al-Attiyah thrown in the towel?

Due to an insurmountable problem with his alternator drive belt, on the face of it, Nasser Al-Attiyah seems to have decided to throw in the towel after 174 km of the firs section of the day’s special.
