Robby Gordon plans to continue driving for himself

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Robby Gordon says he has enough sponsorship to run the full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule next season
and has no interest in driving for anyone but himself.
Gordon said Menards is among the sponsors coming back. Gordon has had sponsorship mainly from Menards and Jim Beam this year. Jim Beam announced last November that it would sponsor Gordon through 2008 and has not yet announced its plans for 2009.
“If people are estimating that we’re going to go away, obviously they don’t know me very well,” Gordon said after qualifying Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway. “We’ll be fine.”
As far as a possible merger – Gordon had agreed in January to be bought out by Gillett Evernham Motorsports but that deal fell through – Gordon says he is not going to drive for anyone else.
“I may let someone come into my shop, but I won’t go into someone else’s shop if that makes any sense,” said Gordon, who is 32nd in points during what has been a crazy season for him.
Gordon recently began a four-race engine-leasing deal with Penske Racing.
“We’re only into race two of it, and I think they’re good motors,” Gordon said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for [team owner] Roger [Penske] and always have. It’s the first time he’s ever done a lease deal and I feel honored that he would do a program like that with us.”

TOG you did post a comment with a reference to Ford on robbynews a few days ago. With the comment about someone "coming into his shop" it makes me wonder about Yates. The only team that may need space is Yates. Would the Jack Roush cult allow Yates to leave the compound?
Also 36th may be the magic # going to Daytona. If DEI fields 3 teams next year the 36th place owner would move up. Teams are not allowed to sell off part of a team, NASCAR stated this when DEI bought Ginn and wanted to sell the #13 points. But hell, it's NASCAR and RCR needs some points so the pencil theory may be applied to the rulebook again.

I think it might be pretty safe to say RG will either stay with Dodge or switch back to Ford with Yates engines.Robby has the rest of 2008 to see how the Penske engines work out for him. One things for sure,RG needs to get SAFELY in the top 35, wipe the slate clean and enter 2009 with confidence and a solid team ready to make yet another run to try to get into the chase for the first time. Robby can drive a racecar.He hasn't forgotten.

I have to imagine Penske as well. I'm not sure where else Robby could even get a Dodge engine at this point since I assume GEM is out of the question.

Theres pretty much only Ganassi left. Don't see it happening though. Again, it's best for all parties involved that Dodge help Robby set up a solid 2 car operation. He'll be a satilite of somebody, since he's not building his own motors. That is unless Mopar jumps in,& starts supplying factory race motors. I dunno if thats plausable in these economic times though. Prolly a lot easier for Dodge to throw some dollars at another team, to give Rob support. I do see it possible to field a second car with Riggs/State, & Kyle/WF (running his partial schedule) splitting the seat time. Maybe Dodge/Mopar sponsorship balancing out whatever sposorship is needed for a full season on it

You know, I'm wondering just how much staying in the top 35 will matter. There are a ton of top 35 teams with no sponsorship on them. By my count there is the #22. #01, #15, #43, #44, #8, #28, and #38 (Meanrds will probably fill one of those). That's 8 cars in the top 35 that aren't funded. If Robby's got funding, he's just got to outlast them. He'll be fine. I do hope he get either a second car or uses Penskes chassis so he can share information.

I heard yesterday that Paul will be a 3rd car @ Yates. So the 28,& 38 SHOULD stay the same. As far as somebody moving in...
I guess I could see things working where Robby gets tech support from Yates,& the Menards car,& the 7 are run from RGM. I'd much rather Robby stay away from the blue oval, but thats jmo.

David Poole said earlier in the week that NASCAR has no definitive policy on "selling points". I guess we are about to find out.
