Randy Lajoie Fails NASCAR Drug Test, Suspended

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR has suspended former driver Randy LaJoie for violating its substance-abuse policy.

In an interview Tuesday on SIRIUS XM Radio, Lajoie says he smoked marijuana once in May.

LaJoie was tested by NASCAR because he wanted to become a spotter for one of Joe Gibbs Racing's Nationwide Series teams.

He has not competed at any of NASCAR's top three national levels since 2006 and has been an analyst for NASCAR the past several years.

In the interview, LaJoie says he also has been suspended from ESPN.

Lajoie raced in 44 races over 12 years in NASCAR's elite Cup Series. His success was in the Nationwide Series, where he won 15 races over 19 seasons.

On one of the ESPN shows he was on, after the Logono road course incident last year, Lajoie really had some harsh things to say about Robby - something about how Rob brought some money to the Nationwide race, but he didn't bring smarts.

I used to root for Randy when he was in the #34 Dollar General Car, I personally like his annoucing too. Its a shame he got caught smoking weed, but he manned up and the punishment shouldn't be too steep in terms of a suspension.

He should have never taken the spotting gig for that one race....

He could have smoked up all he wanted to.

On Sirius he said that 4 days before the Coke 600 he had to take a drug test for a CDL and he passed. So doesnt look like this was a trend.

welll when you know you are being tested...you don't smoke up I imagine....lol

The one he failed was a random test.

I'm not saying he's a pot head....but I also believe at age 40 something you all of a sudden just say..well I never tried pot before...let's start....lmao

I am not sure it was random. Randy said it was part of the Spotters License application. He applied and took the test 4 days after the date with the Dobbie Brothers.

I liked LaJoie's response. Good when they give you too much information sometimes. I doubt he would pass a lie detector test if as if he only smoked pot once. Just a hunch.
