Kind of poetic justice for the way they talked about Robby when he left them after what was it, seven or eight races. I just looked at their website and for a once proud organization they are scraping rock bottom. Meanwhile Robby has done pretty well for himself, especially in this tough economy.

I totally agree! From what I understand, that once-proud team just didn't want to spend the money, preferring to blame bad results on their drivers.

Being that Haas is dropping the #70 for the #14. RGM could go after the #70 as the number will get released. The #70 owners points will follow the #14. So it should become a free number.

Just read on Jayski where Newman will run the #39, not the #4. Guess the PTB got talked out of changing their policy. But all of you know about that "rule book".

I was told about this yesterday afternoon, even before Tony's show. I was talking with a friend and in our conversation he told me that SHR #4 would now be #39. The reason for changing it to #39 is pretty much BS. Yes Ryan ran that number, but the real reason is NASCAR leases the numbers to the teams. Even though Morgan McClure Motorsports is currently not racing due to lack of sponsorship, they still have the number rights as they have not turned the number back into NASCAR.
Like it was posted above MMM was very upset that SHR and NASCAR would take their number from them. I dont know what happened between NASCAR and MMM, but it sounded like NASCAR asked SHR to pick another number as that number was still registered to MMM. I'm sure their was some legal issues brought up by MMM. The last thing NASCAR needs is bad press about taking the number from a once prominent team in NASCAR that is now struggling to stay afloat.
And trust me SHR did not do this just because. 99% of the teams spend big money designing a stylized font and trademarking the number font to their team. Tony did it with the #14 and those types of things have to be done way in advance. Tony even talked about doing it with the #14 a few weeks before his formal sponsor/car unavailing. I bet SHR had already spent money registering the #4, before they decided to make the change to #39. So because of all this I would guess the number change was not something SHR came up with. More like NASCAR told then to find a new number.

Possibly..I think there is an element of truth to what you are saying but #39 has been Ryan's number for a long time everywhere else but in Cup. If you look at when Penske started his then Busch team, he had number 39. All of Newman's dirt cars have number 39. I really think, if you look at Tony's past history, he's respectful of those that came before him. I believe this was more about Tony trying to make things right Morgan-McClure and as well to show Ryan a token of respect. Nice going SHR

Here is an update regarding the #4 to #39 SHR number switch. The whole article can be found on Jayski. From what it sounds like NASCAR screwed up and did not check with MMM to see if they intended on continuing in the sport, NASCAR gave the number the SHR and they shouldn't have. It sounds like NASCAR asked SHR to give the number back and SHR understood and complied. Here's part of the article;
Morgan said Wednesday afternoon that while he had never spoken to Stewart, he maintained faith that NASCAR officials would respect the tradition of the MMM team and disallow the number switch. Morgan-McClure Motorsports ceased operations last January due to a lack of funding. “I knew it was NASCAR’s prerogative, but I never actually believed the [number] change was going to happen unless I heard different from NASCAR,” Morgan said. “There was apparently just a misunderstanding here.”
“We’ve had the #4 for a long time and there is a lot of history there,” said Morgan, who talked to a NASCAR official Monday. “I think NASCAR respects the history of Morgan-McClure Motorsports, and I think they made the right decision.” Speaking with co-host Matt Yocum on the “Tony Stewart Live” show Monday night, Stewart provided insight into his reversal. “We had some hiccups in the #4 with Larry McClure,” Stewart said. “I’m not sure there was enough due diligence when it came to knowing for sure if Mr. McClure was going to have a car for next year. We spoke with NASCAR and NASCAR said that that number was available and I’m not sure that, all the way around, that enough due diligence was done.”
Stewart, a two-time NASCAR series champion, added that he respects the history of the MMM team and realizes the impact a number change would make. “We’ve been told that [McClure] is going to run some races next year and to us, especially me as a car owner, we know how much car numbers mean to teams and organizations,” Stewart said. “
