LAST STAGE of 2022 DAKAR
Stage 12
Liaison > 516 km - Special > 164 km

And the first motorbike has started the last stage of 2022 DAKAR

Moto: Benavides kicks off the special
Kevin Benavides will be relinquishing his crown at the finish after a mechanical forced him to withdraw from stage 10. He is the first biker to get to grips with the closing special of the 44th Dakar. Sam Sunderland, his teammate in the Austrian outfit and current overall leader, will be next in three minutes' time. Only a last-minute surprise can now deny the Brit his second Dakar victory.

Klein top rookie
Mason Klein is the top-ranked rookie. The American sits in ninth place overall, over 50 minutes down on Sam Sunderland. The 20-year-old finished on the podium of stage 3 and turned heads in his debut in the toughest rally raid on Earth. Not unlike Daniel Sanders, who stole the show in his first participation last year and fought for the top honours in this edition before withdrawing due to injury, Klein will be a man to watch in 2023.

Stage 12 The Last Stage

Moto: Sunderland wins the 44th edition of the Dakar
He did it. At 32 years old, Sam Sunderland claimed his second Dakar title five years after his first triumph in 2017. It is a first for GasGas, which recruited him at the eleventh hour last December. It comes as a relief for the Austrians, the constructor behind the red brand, who wrested the crown back from Honda after two years. Pablo Quintanilla took second place for HRC and Matthias Walkner will represent KTM on the bottom step of the podium. Fourth in the virtual classification at the last time check, Adrien Van Beveren looks set to finish just outside the top 3.

Car: Lategan pips Peterhansel at the post
Henk Lategan grabbed his second stage win in the 44th Dakar to finish the rally in style. The South African denied Stéphane Peterhansel what would have been his second success in the Audi RS Q e-tron. The Frenchman ended up 49 seconds back. Another South African, Brian Baragwanath, took the bottom step of the podium at less than two minutes back.

LW Proto: Quintero makes it twelve after Gutiérrez runs out of steam
Cristina Gutiérrez haemorrhaged almost eight minutes to her teammate Seth Quintero at the last time check before the finish. The American has completed the stage, just like Sebastian Eriksson, and picked up his twelfth success this year… Simply amazing!

SSV: Baciuška takes the closing stage
Rokas Baciuška has definitely been one of the breakthrough performances of this year's SSV race. The youngest Lithuanian Dakar participant in history has just claimed his second special of the year. Another rookie, Rodrigo Luppi de Oliveira, took the fight to him in vain. The Brazilian ended up over three minutes back.

Good on Austin Jones, winning the SXS
SSV: Jones denies Farrés!
Gerard Farrés suffered electrical problems in the finale and lost valuable time, allowing Austin Jones to finish the special 4′18″ ahead of him. The American more than made up the deficit of 1′41″ that he had his morning and is therefore the winner of the 44th Dakar in the SSV category, in which he came second last year. It was an insanely close battle between the two South Racing drivers, who scored a 1-2 for their team in the general standings.

Good on Seth Quintero, winning 12 stages during a single DAKAR.

Good on Mason Klein, Moto Rookie 9th
