STAGE 8 TRACKING

STAGE 8: SALTA > SAN MIGUEL DE TUCAMAN

Connection 379km | Special Stage 470km | Total 849km

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Tucuman route will be divided into two timed sections with a variety of scenery. With hoodoos, canyons and cacti, the competitors will discover the red and green backdrop of Argentina’s most beautiful natural landscape, which will unfold for more than 150 km creating a Western atmosphere. During the second half of the timed section, which will take place in a region completely unknown to the Dakar, the contrast will be apparent on the sandy and sometimes tricky tracks. It may also be manifested through the weather conditions, if the wind is combined with the high temperatures which ravage the region. The rest day will rarely have been more deserved, in particular for the motorcyclists who will finish their marathon stage..

Changes in the 2013 Dakar . Due to heavy rains in the last hours on the territory of Salta, the race organization decided to suspend part of the first stage on Saturday, between Salta and Tucuman, corresponding to the eighth stage of the raid.
Thus, what at first pautaba 492 kilometers special stage for the bikes and quads, 471 cars and 155 for for trucks, would be cut in the first part, about 155 kilometers, only for the first group.
The underlying reason would be the rising rivers that cross sections.
This was confirmed via Twitter, Eduardo and Tomas Maffei Alan.
Furthermore, it was reported that, according to the weather conditions on Saturday, the organization will confirm if there is or not, the second tranche.
Note that until the stroke has been carried out according to the planned route. Rounding up Friday 3634 kilometers.

especially the 2WD cars.

Stage 8 has been reduced in length due to heavy rains. The cars will begin at KM288, so that piushes back the special section start time for the cars. Robby Gordon will now begin at 12:11pm/et

Bummed that they shortened the special.. but happy that they didn't cancel like they have in the past. Since the Dakar moved to S.A. I can't remember a year that they didn't cancel a stage.

Maybe someone can answer a question, my husband and i were watching the footage of the flip, and other rally cars and trucks that have gotten stuck in the sand. My husband asked why they dont use airbags to help lift and flip the cars? Like the kind fire and rescue use. I figure it must be against the rules? Does anyone know? I would tweet the question to Robby but he is prob to busy to answer....

@Karen, weight.weight of the bag and of the compressor system big enough to inflate it. I've seen footage of the Trucks using them.

It's a sand dune the air bag would have to be on a hard surface to all the force goes in the direction you want it to.

There is a picture of a bag being used in sand and mud here. http://www.nissan4x4.co.za/technical/AirBags/article.htm

Motorbikes are underway, reminder, they're starting at CP6

Caselli blazing the trail today, he's off the line first.

Only the motorcycles, quads and cars will be racing this afternoon. American Kurt Caselli was the first rider to start the special at noon local time, followed by "Chaleco" López and Olivier Pain, the Frenchman at the top of the general classification.
