COURSE OVERVIEW

It was a painful experience for many competitors when they discovered the area last year. At the beginning of the special stage, the dunes follow one another, each one like the next, strung out in a never-ending desert capable of unsettling the best technical specialists. In the opposite direction, Stéphane Peterhansel and “Nani” Roma, both of whom are masters when it comes to crossing dunes, each lost almost fifteen minutes there, and risked missing out on the first two places of the overall standings. And the level of difficulty will be even more demanding this year! During the crucial stage of the first week, the rally will be even tougher for motorcyclists: they will quail on a 2-km slope, of which the gradient will put the descent of Iquique on a par with a gentle children’s slide.

wow, great save, or pure luck,.

Looks like he's taken some lessons from Pastrana.

Awesome save!!!

I bet he going to stop at sea side village to grab some fish tacos and Carona before getting to the shop.

4 sure

As the song goes...

"...nobody ever had a rainbow baby until he had the rain."

Well I'd say it bloody well rained today!

Soldier on 315.

Well done Robby. Now get 'er back to the Bivvy and have the boys fix 'er up! :)

Just got home from work, looks like he made it. Glad the day is over, hope it's not the race.

Seriously though, didn't he flip the Hummer last year? I'm not an off road guy (I'm working on it though), but it seams like there must be a system to right a vehicle? If not, that should be something to look into. This costs hours of race time and a second vehicle pop's it right over. Something built in to the roof like outriggers on a crane. I'm sure eye's are rolling at this idea but take a second and think about it. An electric motor like a winch motor, a telescopic 2 pc arm & hydraulics.I don't think it's far fetched with the technology he has and the thinking out side the box that RG does. I know it weighs 5k, but leverage isn't carrying the total weight. Just an idea.

still needed radiators

I was thinking along the same lines. Maybe a way of rigging the sand ramps with the built-in jacks for leverage.

True, the radiators would still be an issue, but they may have been able to jury-rig something if they were on their wheels.

Tough day for sure

Robby says...

We started off second and we got through some really gnarly, silty stuff. We went over a dune and it was just straight down with one right end to it. We idled into it just enough to tip us over the front, honestly, five miles an hour probably, it wasn't a big rollover. Except it put all the weight of the vehicle on the front, broke the windshield and flopped it on its roof and we had to wait for new radiators to get to us. It was a long wait. It's been a disappointing rally for us; we expected so much more. The first day I was too conservative and this dune I went over just a little too much, so we can't find a happy medium I guess. The rollover was honestly five miles an hour. It stood on the top for a while and I thought it was going to come backwards, but it just flopped over. It wasn't that dangerous except for the fact that we were on the other side of the dune. It was probably five to seven minutes before Peterhansel got there, so we'd already put some gap on him, but that doesn't do us any good now. You know, we just needed to have a good day today. I don't know what's going wrong… Like I said, we've just had a horrible rally so far this year. I don't see a bright side coming, because it's going to be a long ten days. Last year we were so good most of the rally and this year we started off conservatively like I did last year and it's just been unfortunate. We haven't been able to put it all together. We've got the team, we've got the cars, but I guess the drivers are making mistakes. It's just unfortunate. I think we're going to have sit back and see if it really makes sense to continue or not.
