RGM back in the Top 35? UPDATE: 2/9/12 NOPE!

UPDATE: 2/9/12- A new 2 car team onwed by former TRG investors will take over Red Bull Racing's Owner Points in 2012. Landon Cassill will drive the #83 with Doug Richert as crew chief. Travis Kvapil is linked to be the 2nd driver with details to be announced soon.

This means Trevor Bayne and Robby Gordon will have to qualify on speed (or race in during Duels) the first five races of the season.

#71 team not returning in 2012?: Sirius XM NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody has learned that the #71 TRG Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team will not return in 2012. Sources close to the team say TRG will announce later this week that it has shuttered its NASCAR operation and will compete only on the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series in 2012. TRG finished 36th in Sprint Cup owner points last season, and would not have been a guaranteed starter for the season-opening Daytona 500. TRG Motorsports made a total of 106 starts since joining the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009, with a pair of Top-10 finishes to its credit. Bobby Labonte claimed a 10th-place finish for the team at Talladega in the fall of 2009, while Mike Bliss finished ninth in the 2010 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona. Exactly. I fully expected the Red Bull owner points to go somewhere as part of a package deal, as well as the #6 if they didn't run it in the 500. The only points that were somewhat left up in the air were the RCR, but I was still thinking that he would run an extra car for the 500 as well... possibly a one-off deal with a special driver.

MIchael Waltrip confirmed today that his intent to buy RBR assets and points fell thru. As of today, the RBR teams points have not been transferred. With the #71 team closing shop, the #21 and #7 team would move inside the Top 35

It looks like Patrick is racing with Tommy Baldwin's points. So, that is one driver who will not be buying a now defunct teams points. Probably a good thing. Looking better for Robby at Daytona.

As of right now, the Red Bull racing points are still up in the air and it doesn't seem likely that RB wants to be a part of another team... even if it's only on paper. All other owner's points that were in question (33 & 6 mostly) are being used for at least the 500. That will move two cars into the top 35/locked in spots for Daytona. Technically that would be the 21 and 71... but since the 71 has suspended Cup operations that would possibly move RGM into 35th.

As I stated above, I don't see the Red Bull points getting sold. However, I could see the 71 points going somewhere or being put to use if the money is right. Lets say a guy like Michael Waltrip wants to be guaranteed a spot in the 500. If the price is right for Kevin Buckler, I'm pretty sure that he would "show up" with a car in Daytona (even if it's only on paper).

Things are looking better for the 7, but I wouldn't count the chickens until they hatch!

I would say that RG will attempt the first five races and then possibly the plate tracks and the roadies in Nationwide and Cup . No way that TRG, and Red Bull owner points trickle down to RGM, does not make business sense to just let something that has that type of value go wither in the wind.

Danica Patrick is in the Daytona 500 field, and she didn't even need to turn a lap to get there.

Patrick's Stewart-Haas Racing team has obtained points from Tommy Baldwin Racing to guarantee the driver a spot in the Great American Race, NASCAR.COM has learned. The deal means Patrick will not have to race her way into the event in the 150-mile duel races, and does not risk missing what will be a much-hyped Sprint Cup debut.

Baldwin's No. 36 car, driven last season by Dave Blaney, finished inside the top 35 in owner points and is locked into the first five events of the upcoming campaign. Although the transfer ensures Patrick's No. 10 car a spot in the Daytona 500, it means Blaney will have to get in on speed -- something he did often last season, when Baldwin's car proved especially proficient on restrictor-plate tracks. Blaney's best finish last year was a third at Talladega, and he was at the front near the end of the Daytona 500 before finishing deep in the pack.

Daytona is also a strong track for Patrick, who enjoyed one of her better career finishes there with a 10th-place result in last year's summer Nationwide race. Her Sprint Cup car was also strong in testing earlier this month on the 2.5-mile layout.

At this point, there's very few teams that are in position to buy points. The biggest threat would be MWR. They were unsuccessful in purchasing points from RBR. They could attempt to purchase the #71 teams points, but unlikely considering there's nothing TRG has to offer MWR (other than just points). All other teams below RGM have indicated they will attempt to make the race on speed or duals.
One of the new teams Like Jay Robinson or the #19 team could be a player...but highly doubtful considering they both are struggling to secure sponsorship.

Like TOG mentioned, the #71 team will be the wild card heading into Daytona. They have no plans to run but could be in the market to sell.

As of today...still looking good for RGM...

Robby, including others should have to race their way in each week, no matter what track and who you are.

Wow..I guess the boss didn't want to park his hauler with the "lower" half...lol

I am shocked they didn't just transfer the Owner's points from the 14 to the 10 and have Tony use his untrumpable PCP to guarantee his spot, if needed. Why waste the money buying it from somewhere else? Just odd to me
