Closing the Truck side of Germain was expected.

Does the Cup operation remain?

Yes, currently. Geico changed their support and is expecting better results from the CUP side.

When the Germain Brothers sort of split and Bob Germain took over the race teams operations, this is when things started to change. Germain bros were funding a majority of the expense out of their own pockets. When the economy took a hit so did car sales, so the money being spent racing was felt more and Bob was the primary owner. The plan was to expand and have teams like #77 Lofton's and #62 Gaughan's help subsidize the expense of the #30 having little too no sponsorship, and Geico only paying for partial season on both the #9 truck and #13 Cup car. Later in the year they ran the #60 S&P to help support the cost of the #13 cup car. When Lofton left it took funding away from the truck teams, Gaughan's money was to be focused on his truck, and they had yet to find funding for the #30 and ended up partnering with the closing #5 team to keep Todd Bodine going for the rest of the year. By mid season Gaughan made it clear he was leaving at season's end. Germain knew the #5 sponsorship was only for the remainder of this year, and Geico was looking to expand their role in CUP, so the #9 truck funding would be leaving. At this point it was best for Germain to focus on keeping Geico and expanding the Cup operation and making that team better. So they made the decisions to close the truck side of things.

Germain has a really nice facility. It was amazing that at one point they were running 4 truck teams and 2 Cup teams. Germain also has nice equipment, they have there own pull down rig and 7 post. On the truck side they did everything, built their own chassis and bodies. On the Cup side they used MWR chassis.

The Germain's are not foolish business men.Much of which was done was at Toyota's request.Germain's and Toyota have a very long history.Makes you wonder why Toyota isn't repaying the Germain ties with TRD engines? The Germains have made billions for Toyota.MWR and Gibbs have just been an expense,IMO.

You just gotta love the info here
