NASCAR will implement two rule changes for next month's running of the Good Sam Club 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. The size of the restrictor plate that teams will use to prepare and practice for the race will increase by 1/64 inch and is now going to be 57/64 inch diameter. This will provide the teams with an additional 7-10 horsepower. Additionally, the pressure relief valve on the cars' cooling system will be recalibrated to reduce the pressure by approximately eight pounds per square inch from last April's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega. "After the last few superspeedway races, we've heard many drivers express their desire to open up the size of the restrictor plate some and we thought the time was right to do that," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president, competition. "We anticipate these revisions in the rules package for Talladega will help continue to provide competitive and exciting racing for the fans."(NASCAR)

Hopefully if RGM can qualify he might consider an audible. This should help break up the "push draft" some.

If Robby were to race, I hope that he is there for PRACTICE, it seems that in PRACTICE, running partners are determined, and the slower cars are all that is left to run with...
The main reason I hope RG calls an audible would be to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of SPEED! It all started last year at Dega, and no AMP this year to block them. Not to mention that's the track only 20 mins from my house.

The biggest hurdle for RGM will be qualifying. I pray for rain! RGM builds an awesome drafting car, just hasn't really ever produced that fast all-by-itself car. Wood Bros will easily make the race and so will FRM cars with Roush-Yates stuff. Joe builds qualifying cars so that leaves very little opportunity to make the race. If the team can qualify, I can see RG calling an audible. Just gotta make the field first.
@Zoom, didn't TOG say anniversaries are for marriage. No it won't change the racing (single dance partner) in that the rule will cause more more push/pushy swaps.
I'm just glad they are attempting to make changes to the 2 by 2. As for what impact this will have on the #7, I just dont see anything changing to RG's current cup schedule ATM. Texas & Phoenix are the next races.
Looking to see let 2x2 stuff that's for sure
I love plate racing. I hate the two-car packs. As much as I would love to see an audible called I'm just skeptical from watching the Daytona audible and listening to the scanner that race. It seems to be too difficult to find a GOOD partner that you can stay with the entire race unless you have teammates. But it really doesn't matter because I believe TOG when he says Texas and Phoenix are the only scheduled races.
Chris - you are correct . RG wasn't to fond of 2x2 at Daytona ( july ). As for the remaining races, I am just going by what Robby said a month ago ( interview here )

Robby Gordon plans to start and park in all but three of the remaining Cup races unless he can get additional sponsorship, he said at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Gordon said he planned to run the entire race at Chicago, Texas and Phoenix because he has enough sponsorship for those races. If he gets more sponsorship, he’ll run more races. Gordon also continues to build the energy drink company he created to help fund his racing programs.

Pretty self-explanatory if you ask me...lol...
I just usually browse here, but does Arrington even have a RP Motor ? Didnt he run Penske motors for the other plate races this year & I saw that he no longer has a Penske deal. Seems like a bunch of expense for a race without sponsorship.
Don't quote me,but I thought at the July Dayota race,Robby had an RGM engine.
I don't think changing the RP size really changes the 2x2 drafting, it just gives the cars a little more power to get away from each other if necessary. Reducing the cooling system pressure 8psi will greatly increase the amount of times those 2x2 drafts will need to swap lead cars though.

Personally for RGM, I'm hoping for a qualifying rainout. No confidence they'll make a RP race on speed...
@Brett, good call on the Q rain out.Maybe if we'all do a rain dance, maybe. As far as the plate change and cooling system psi,you and I are on the same page. Rain dance, rain dance.................
