Robby Gordon plans to continue driving for himself

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Robby Gordon says he has enough sponsorship to run the full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule next season
and has no interest in driving for anyone but himself.
Gordon said Menards is among the sponsors coming back. Gordon has had sponsorship mainly from Menards and Jim Beam this year. Jim Beam announced last November that it would sponsor Gordon through 2008 and has not yet announced its plans for 2009.
“If people are estimating that we’re going to go away, obviously they don’t know me very well,” Gordon said after qualifying Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway. “We’ll be fine.”
As far as a possible merger – Gordon had agreed in January to be bought out by Gillett Evernham Motorsports but that deal fell through – Gordon says he is not going to drive for anyone else.
“I may let someone come into my shop, but I won’t go into someone else’s shop if that makes any sense,” said Gordon, who is 32nd in points during what has been a crazy season for him.
Gordon recently began a four-race engine-leasing deal with Penske Racing.
“We’re only into race two of it, and I think they’re good motors,” Gordon said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for [team owner] Roger [Penske] and always have. It’s the first time he’s ever done a lease deal and I feel honored that he would do a program like that with us.”

When I spoke to RG yesterday he told me the Penske Power is a HUGE difference from GEM. He also said next week will be the first "Trophy Truck CUP Car" He says it is built WAY different than a normal CUP car.

Hey Fly! There was a post on one of the boards about the difference between the COT chassis and the TT chassis. To me it sounded like there was the issue of stiffness and weight between the two. We know that stiffness allows the setup to remain constant over a run with better handling. Do you think this is why Robby feels this will be a big improvement? The Lowes Test Mule was fast and next week is the Lowes race.

I thought that with the COT, you can't have any different methods of construction. It all has to follow the template design.
I can just see them trying to get that car thru tech, if it's "WAY different than a normal CUP car"...

Aerodynamically there isn't much you can do but you can definitely work on the front end and suspension pieces, from what I understand. Maybe Planet Robby's resident engineer would be a good person to ask.

Listening to Robby, he sounds alot more positive and confident latley. This finish will be a good shot in the arm.
Put alot of distance on the #77 team, and closed the gap on several teams ahead.
Right now Robby has to race the #00 (which is doing pretty darn good latley too), #84 (Scott Speed might be good, but he'll still be a rookie - I see a few wrecks coming), #66 (Stewart /Haas is desperately trying to keep this team inside the Top 35 too), and #22 (GEM's future ride).
Need a good run at Charlotte, Martinsville will be Robby's biggest obstacle. Atlanta, Texas, Pheonix and Miami should be good for Robby. Earlier this season Robby finished 40th at Martinsville. He was Top 30 or Top 25 at Atlanta, Texas & Pheonix and finished 27th at Miami last year. Martinsville will be the hurdle.
