Starting positions for each stage are determined by the prior stages finishing order aren't they? So I would asssume Robby would want (require?) that the second car try to be as competitive as possible so that they would be starting each stage close together. If Robby needs assistance on the course, he would want the 2nd car as close behind as possible. What if it turns out the 2nd car is faster, or has better luck, would Robby consider being the "water carrier" if the 2nd car has a better chance at the overall win? Would "team orders" require the faster car to back off just to so Robby finishes first on the team? I would think as the team owner, he would be motivated to have either car do well.

Unlikely. The Water Carrier is much heavier and has specific directions to be more cautious. The only way the roles would switch would be because of a catastrophic failure or crash on RGs truck.

What if they have a navigation error or a rash of mechanical problems/flats/stucks early in the race that puts them 1 hour + behind? How far back do they let themselves get before they are willing to swap roles?

1 hour back is not that far back in the Dakar. The 2nd truck (327) will wait on course early for the 303 to pass if 303 finds itself starting behind at the start of the stage. Keep in mind the start of the stage resets the starters so they are only minutes apart.
RG had to do this in 05 for the VW team. It is part of the rally.
What is tenuous is without the big truck this year it puts 327 at risk of falling out. if 528 was not there last year BJ may still be on his roof...

I have not seen any confirmation that they did or did not send a #5XX truck yet. Lets hope there is. Can any confirm this?
