First - thanks (again) for the site - posting this video is really appreciated...I can't keep up with TV schedules.

So, my title line is a quote from RG about RGM....which, at first seemed out of character for someone I've always considered a racer/competitor above all else.  His answer to "success" or the definition of success was illuminating though.  (assuming I didn't read too much into it)

RG has had a number of "dreams" he's publicly stated in the past:  I vividly recall a burning desire to win the Indy 500 and I'm sure a Dakar win is now very, very high on his list.  I've never once heard him talk about winning a Nascar Championship - only about being competitive.

This, of course, is a big guess - but, he may be defining success as "Racing when he wants to race...and where he wants to race".

Wondering if the RGM management team here (sarcasm intended) thought the same thing after seeing that hub spot?  I have to admit, seeing RG in a stadium again would be cool - I first saw him race at Anaheim stadium in the late 80's - doing a Mickey Thompson thing.

Thoughts?

How do you feel about cheering for a marketing company?
His comment is based on the way things have changed in racing & what it takes to go racing. He has said that line at the beginning of the season in some radio interviews.
I would love to see him back in Indy cars!! He held his own in CART and IRL!! Nascar is too much of a club!!
Hmmm - I dont cheer for RGM, I usually root for Robby. So, when he's racing Dakar - I root for him, in SCORE..ditto. To be honest, Nascar isn't the most intersting racing series - it's just the best marketed in the U.S. (Similar to F1 in Europe)

If you want to get down to "interesting" racing - the Dakar, WRC, Australian V8, etc. are all more interesting.

In answer to your question - I don't mind cheering for RGM as a marketing company - that's what the business has turned into. In fact, one could argue that RGM is "better at marketing" in many regards because they are forced to get sponsorship without the TV coverage. How hard is it for Hendrick to get sponsorship really? His sponsors know how many minutes of advertising they get when they sign on. Not much challenge (comparatively) to securing sponsorship in that scenario. To put it in baseball terms, If the yankees win a series - I'm not surprised...in fact, I'm surprised when they don't. For the payroll - they should win at least 1 out of 3 years or they aren't getting the value from their players.

In my (not so humble opinion) Nascar isn't even really a drivers series at all - it's more of an engineering game. The real competition is between the crew chiefs.
We do see occassional variations from the above (e.g. Kyle at Bristol) etc. But - predominently, it's all about the data and the CC knowledge of how to make that work into a driveable car.

From a spectator perspective - I actually preferred the IROC series - that tells me much more about the drivers. Don't get me wrong - I love the tech side of the business...but, it isn't exactly good TV.
Pretty good marketing team... "Speedfactory.TV will only get better and better when they combine all the Cup, off road and other stuff.
The guy can flat out sell....just as well as race. Sadly the two are no longer mutually exclusive and with the economy down money is down and finishes are down. It will all get better on the flip side!
He has said more than a few times over the years that he wants to a bring a stadium racing series back.
I thought also early on in the year he said he might have some intriguing news on that front later this year. So much has changed this year though, who knows where everything stands.
