Big changes coming for Sprint Cup schedule

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- The 2011 Sprint Cup Series schedule will be released next week -- and at least two facilities have scheduled news conferences to reveal some of the changes to the public.

Chicagoland Speedway has scheduled a news conference for Monday, with Cup Series points leader Kevin Harvick and David Reutimann, winner of the most recent race at the track, along with NASCAR senior vice president of racing operations Steve O'Donnell planning to attend.

ISC spokesman Lenny Santiago would not confirm media reports that Chicago would play host to the first Chase race in 2011.

"What I can say is that our requests for realignment of our dates around Kansas Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway have resulted in some things we think will be exciting for our fans," Santiago said.

A spokesperson for New Hampshire Motor Speedway said, "We do not have any confirmation [of the schedule] as of yet. However, Jerry [Gappens, track president] expects that we will have an announcement early next week."

NHMS has played host to the Chase opener since the inception of the 10-race playoff in 2004.

Kentucky Speedway will hold a news conference Tuesday. It is expected the 11-year-old facility will get a Cup event for 2011.

Atlanta Motor Speedway on Thursday announced its 2011 schedule, with only one Cup date -- Labor Day weekend.

Kansas Speedway, which early this year announced plans to build a casino hotel facility on its grounds, also is expected to be granted a second Cup race date -- most likely from Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

NASCAR, which didn't respond to an e-mail requesting a comment, has repeatedly said track operators may request schedule realignments among their own facilities, with Kentucky's race apparently coming at Atlanta's expense.

Please NH, keep both, but it looks like no more "The Chase Starts Here" shirts for me after this Sept. Hopefully the Gappens annocement will deal with lights, he told me earlier this year they were comong
Well it's official, Chicagoland will be the 1st stop in the Chase next season. Weekend will be Sept16-18th,& yes that means its a Sunday (day) race. Still weighing the pro's & cons personaly. I don't like losing the night race. I do like that it wont be 1000 outside. I dont like that its outside the summer schedule, where kids wont be out of school...attendance could suffer. I do like that's pretty clear of monsoon season....but who could forget the tropicana orange taking a lap...
oh yeah, thats right....
The bad news is that the silly Chase is still in effect.
You don't have to worry about KC attendence based on Chiefs fans, they're all staying home these days.
Great memory, I forgot about the Tropicana ball rolling down the front stretch..Ha Ha, on a side note I was at the Mandalay Bay pool last week, and a Bud Light ball the size of the Tropicana ball was just done being blown up, and the marketing folks were rolling it into the pool for a private party when some drunk popped it w/ a ciggarette. I thought the Bud marketing guy was gonna kill this drunk w/ the cig. As far as RGM, onward and upward, never a dull moment being an RG fan.
What a joke giving Kansas and Joliet another race. Joliet better pray the Cubs, Sox and Bears are not in town or that place will be empty.
saluki7 they are moveing the joliet race it still only has 1 race
It's not another race here, guess you didnt read my response. we're losing our July night race, in favor of this Sept day race.
Chuck, true about the Chiefs ticket holders, I live two and one half hours away and used to go every weekend, now I just sell my two season tickets most of the time. Tough times being a Chiefs fan now, don't even mention the Royals that is an MLB farm team, on to the big roundy round in Michigan. Good luck RG and hopefully a solid run for team morale building
With NASCAR building a hotel and casino off turn 2 at Kansas Speedway is it really a surprise they added a second date?
