NASCAR gets tougher to protect its brand

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Concerns about a half-empty race track dogged NASCAR long before Sunday’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the sanctioning body’s top officials didn’t want to discuss attendance or any other ailments plaguing the nation’s No. 1 racing series.
The conversation was instead steered to all the things NASCAR is doing right, a theme that became evident before the season started, when competitors spread a message of hope and unity.
Turns out that the racing series was serious about keeping everybody on point.
The Associated Press has learned that NASCAR warned teams during the offseason that public criticism of the sport would no longer be tolerated, and at least two star drivers have been fined—one as much as $50,000—for comments that were deemed destructive to the industry.
NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston on Monday night confirmed some action had been taken, but would not discuss details.
“It is the sanctioning body’s obligation on behalf of the industry and our fans to protect the sport’s brand,” Poston said. “Any action taken by NASCAR has nothing to do with the drivers expressing an opinion—it’s focused on actions or comments that materially damage the sport.

No, the racing did that all on its own. Talk about people who just don't get it. WATCH THE RACES! They were AWFUL when the COT debuted!

I might argue that all stock car ( local Late model all the way to Cup) racing leaves alot to be desired,since coil bind/bump stop set-ups came to be. This evolution single handedly made the gap between the mega-teams (more resources)and small teams(fewer resources) IMO

the drivers need to form a union, all other sports have a player's union. but then again, in the nba you can't critize crap or oyu are fined.

Independent contractors, NAZICAR called them when rusty Wallace was talking about it and a retirement system.
I think if the drivers were to do anything you would first have to get 40 + guys who can get along. The coil bind and gear rule have these cars driving like a go cart sometimes. You can only go so fast and then tapped out everyone runs around. In the end you have to chose this though. Which would you rather see a double file restart for a lump of rubber or a parade of strung out noise makers chasing this weeks rabbit. If I had one thing I would change about nascar......sorry NAZICAR is this: You get to the track and get chassis dynoed with a NAZIgear then you can run the rearend and tranny combo of your choice. Have it boys, there are only so many engine builders around now and then we can watch a race and practice will mean so much more. One problem solver in there, multiple car teams can run only the same rearend ratio so there will be no advantage at practice.......it's easy ask anyone in the garage.

Absolutely bring back the old points system. And they're talking about tweaking it even more for next year. It's like the first 25 races don't even exist.
I just hate how NASCAR claims to listen to its fans, but I'm pretty sure we've been loud and clear on how we feel about the chase and the COT.
NASCAR as shot themselves in the foot with these changes, but rather than just admitting they were wrong, they keep trying to weasel out of it and are making things worse.

I've heard on NASCAR Now that they're considering an elimination type of chase, 15 drivers make the chase and 5 are eliminated every race or every other race. They didn't delve into specifics.
