I'm going over a short list of what I would pack along and before you say space or weight i've considered that. In thinking I ask why no spare alternator would bolt in the inner hub of the spare tire rim for starters. Seems a bit strange that there would be no spare i'm thinking there is a spare battery ...right?

That's right SHIT HAPPENS that is what you think of before you go on a road trip. Driving to a NASCAR race 500 miles away bring lotsa water so on on and upward ...what are the top three parts you critics would bring other than "a spare tire".....Im not a dick but a bigger fan than you will ever be just wondering why a critical "low space" part was not on board. I'm going across the desert , first thing i'll pack is an @##$%^ fan.
RGFAN- thats what gets me. Folks think that RG has never done this before .
No shit. Have some respect people. These guys are doing some seriously special things. Enjoy it with respectful amazement. Be proud.
Ok, there are race cars.....hummers, vw's, etc.
And then there are race trucks, which carry all the extra parts, just in case
And then there are the bikes, which dont carry shit, not even an extra tire....race hummers carry 2.
If the race cars carried all the parts needed to fix things, they would be big enough to classify as race trucks, which would eliminate the race car class, which we all enjoy.
Bottom line........you get the jist of it alll.....if they had an alternator on board, something else would have broke...ha ha
Hey my Powerstroke has two alternators, It was a factory option. And it has two batteries.
Hey, I think its awesome considering the problems, the coverage that Team Hummer is getting!!
All I'll say is that it was good to have a back-up part available, whether is was there from start of rally or after, not having the support race truck, throwing one on BJ's just in case.
The temps where crazy those couple of days, I would think any alternator would have trouble in the terrian and heat and who knows, maybe that high of temp wasn't thought of in advance.
Was just reading on Cup COT alternators, so much for saving teams money!!! What used to cost $500 5 years ago, last year... $3000... 2009... a whopping $6000 !!! All because of heat generated w/ this stupid ___ car!
Robby has a complete donor car chasing him. YOU can't get no better than that> Can You??? I think not!
i know exactly what happened. the restrictor they are forced to use on the motor didn't allow the engine to turn enough rpm to spin the alternator fast enought to keep up with the drain imposed by the huge mondo stereo system rg requires while racing, he drives much faster when he listens to snoop dogg lol. oh yeah i almost forgot, there wasn't enough room for the spare alternator as the co-driver had the spare amps between his legs and the spare speakers in his hands, lol. seriously though i agree with matt, " if it wasn't the alternator it would have been something else." i've been off-road racing for 32 years and you just can never cover everything you may possibly need. that's what great chase crews are for imho. besides great race car drivers overcome problems like this and persevere to the finish. and rg is mos def one of the greatest off-road drivers of all time.
alternator would have been the first spare part on the list
I read on a site where he explained what happened and said he switched back and fourth between the batteries until it was all over and waited for Mr. Baldwin for over 2 hours as he was stuck somewhere but he says "he gave him his spare" now that I don't get? I recall when Robby gave his power steering unit to the lady team mate he had when he drove for VW. I have the highest esteem for Robby I consider the debate closed but at the same i'm getting ticked off as the Dakar slowly slips away.
