Nationwide Post Race Quotes From Robby about Incident

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Joey Logano and Robby Gordon got into beating and banging on the track during the Zippo 200 on Saturday, resulting in a flat tire for both of them, then more contact and some hard feelings following the Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen International.

The 19-year-old Logano, who eventually spun and hit the wall to finish 33rd, voiced his displeasure afterward with Gordon.

“He decided to wreck me under caution, which is not real cool, I think,” said the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. “It’s a pretty raw deal to race someone pretty stupid. You can’t fix stupid. It’s forever. … I got caught with an idiot.”

Gordon’s response?

“Whatever,” said the veteran driver/owner. “I’m not too worried about what Joey Logano thinks to be honest with you. The second time [when he wrecked] he got into somebody else. I don’t think he passed anybody without running into them first. That’s what he did to me. So it is what it is. He’s not going to run into me and think he’s going to go on by because he knocked me sideways. That’s just not the way it goes.”

It is unlikely Gordon and Logano will forget the incident soon.

“He cut down my left-front tire earlier and we got into a grudge match after that,” Logano said. “It was back-and-forth and back-and-forth into each other. Eventually a caution came out and he put me into the fence and my car went up in flames.

“That was real nice. You remember that stuff. Eventually it’s going to turn around and bite him because he races everyone the same way just like that. I don’t know if this is the one place he thinks he can run good so he beat the hell out of everybody. You just remember that. Eventually everyone is going to start doing that back to him. What goes around comes around.”

Gordon said Logano hit him first to start the exchange.

“He hit me first, so it all started with him making contact with my back bumper in Turn 11,” Gordon said. “That’s where it all started. If he can learn to pass me clean, I’m cool with it. But if he’s going to run into me, he’s going to get hit back. It’s just plain and simple.”

Neither driver competes in the Nationwide series full time. It was Gordon’s first start of the season in the series as he hoped to score a win on a road course where he has won in the Cup series.

Gordon had a long day after starting third. He got hit from behind and then into the back of Greg Biffle, who then spun Gordon. Even with front-end damage to his car – and even after heavy cosmetic damage after the tire issue that followed the first Logano incident – Gordon was running fast lap times. He had to settle for 14th.

“Until Logano got into me and got flat tires for both of us, we were hanging in there in eighth place,” Gordon said. “I got really, really aero tight with the hood being [bowed] up [from damage] like it was. All in all, we had a decent day.”

UPDATE: Statement From Robby Gordon

"After reviewing the comments by Logano and the replay of the day's events, I felt that it was necessary to explain what happened during yesterday's race from my prospective.

This whole turn of events started with Joey running into the back of my No. 55 in Turn 10. He then knocked me sideways in Turn 11. To show him my displeasure, I ran him down towards the inside wall on the front straight. I tried to do a crossover move in Turn 1 to get back by him; however, I missed judged a little resulting in both of us getting flat tires.

During the final incident that ended Joey's day, we were racing for the lucky dog position. We both had good cars and were just trying to improve our finishing position for the day. After the bus stop chicane, Joey wrecked the No. 34 of Tony Raines. This contact allowed me to get underneath him in Turn 9. He saw that I was going to pass him for the Lucky Dog position, so he tried to block me. This maneuver resulted in his right rear tire connecting with my left front. From there, I felt he would be okay because he was in the section where the outer loop was. Rather than going down the inner loop, he decided to cut across the grass, hitting the tire barrier.

At the end of the day I'm just glad Joey is okay. This is a highly competitive sport, and we are all very passionate when we are on the track. Tempers have a tendency to flare, but hopefully in the future we will both race each other cleaner.

Under my own doing, I did stop by the NASCAR hauler this morning to converse with them about yesterday. There will be no repercussions from yesterday' events," commented Robby Gordon.

It happens. Robby was in the top 10 with a car beat to hell before all this mess happened.

I mean you go into it to win with no worrying about points racing. These things happen. Robby is passionate and up until last week little had happened on track that I can remember like this.

Robby just needs a solid top 10 run tomorrow and we will forget all about this crap. Robby will let it all pass to by and large, I'm hoping as well.

Big deal.
I like this line.

“Whatever,” said the veteran driver/owner. “I’m not too worried about what Joey Logano thinks to be honest with you."
Its the same thing he always says....
Just got done watching the race on tape. So the Golden Child hits RG going into turn 11. Robby runs him down to the wall down the front straight, then he turns into his LR going into turn 1 on the next lap, then he squeezes him in the bus stop, then he dumps JLo as the yellow comes out off of turn 9. When the hell does payback end? What's next torch his motorhome? Same thing at Pocono when he screwed around with Stremme for such a long time after the incident. If you want to get Logano back do it and get it over with. Enough with the drama queen crap. Quite frankly I'm embarrassed. If you wonder sometimes why Robby gets a bad rap, then look at it from the casual observer's point of view. I love Robby's passion, but let's face it, he gets obsessed with payback to a fault. In the PC world of NA$CAR it doesn't endear him to Mike Helton & the boys or his competitors one damn bit (not that it should matter anyways). Robby is better than playing bumper cars with a 19 year old. I'm sure I'm going to take some heat, but step back and take another look today's mess.
I agree 100%. Love Robby, hate his antics..
Fun race.
Funny watching RG bust out the emotion and Kyle Busch holding it in. If kyle holds all his shit in any longer this year, his colon is going to bust.

That was the best Nationwide race since......... Montreal!!!

Is he speaking from experience? Or from watching the races on TV growing up?

Eventually everyone is going to start doing that back to him. What goes around comes around.

YES it does Joey! Your mouth will not go unnoticed by Robby.

Wow! Joey must have learned to use the potty all by himself and no longer needs his pull ups.
This 19 year old KID in his first full Cup season thinks that he can play bumper cars and then shit talk about a veteran driver afterwards , a driver that has been racing longer than he has been alive. What ever happened to gaining the veteran drivers respect through out the first season? Next season his yellow rookie stripes come off. I wonder how much more wannabe badass will come out of him then? The media has really pumped up this KIDS ego.

For me personally , Out of 43 drivers on the track , I would NOT choose Robby Gordon to prove to everyone that I can take it and also dish it out too. Robby WILL send this KID back to school! If this KID wrecks Robby.....Robby will pull him out of his car and SPANK his ass right there on the track! Someone needs to sit Joey down and make him watch every race that Robby went after the driver that pissed him off. On and off the track.

Gordon’s response?

He’s not going to run into me and think he’s going to go on by because he knocked me sideways. That’s just not the way it goes.”

Joey's crew chief Zippy should tape that comment to Joey's dash in everyone of his cars for every race.

It was a pretty good race. I enjoyed it.
Look I love Robby and have for years, but he needs to knock this crap off. I don't care if Logano hit him while trying to pass. So what, just pass him back. Don't spend the rest of the race getting your revenge. He was smart at Pocono and didn't wreck Stremme, but he lost it at the Glen. Like I say I love him, but this kind of stuff I holds him back I think. Makes him look bad and makes me wonder what he's thinking. I know i'll get flak for going against Robby, but he needs to settle down and just race. I think he could have made the race interesting between himself, Ambrose and Kyle. Well if he hadn't been wrecked by a bug eyed dummy (biffle) early on. Even then he was running fast. He makes his own bad luck.
I very completely agree with you 100% on everything you said.
But at the same time though , Joey needs a fast reality check!
That 19 yr.old KID is racing with the grown ups now.
He really needs to becarefull with what he says and how he interacts with the veterans on the track.
I agree with you, Logano needs to watch himself he has a long way to go
Quiet,the men are talking.
Joey is learning a truth that all yound men need to learn.
Robby could have handled it in a calmer fashion, but EVERYONE
knows that this is how drivers are educated about protocol on
the racetrack.
Brian France wanted more emotion, more passion.
It is funny,Kyle is biting his tongue,Robby is telegraphing his
aggression.
To each his own.
Me?
I LOVED it.
Like the wicked witch said,What a world!
I was embarrassed watching the race yesterday. I listen to the scanner on Sundays and it clears a lot up. Robby is a hothead. We've always known this, we love him for it but every hothead needs that equalizer, someone to calm him down when he gets fired up. Let's call it the blue cheese dressing to the inferno hot wings. Kirk does NOTHING when Robby gets on a tangent.

Last week at Pocono I wanted to puke. Robby had a good points day going and a good car. If they would have shown the "points as they run" the 7 would have passed the 98 and the 55 in standings. You'd have thought that someone would have mentioned that to him when he was losing his mind over the 12 car. Instead you get an occasional "OK" or "Alright Rob" from Kirk. Not a "calm down driver, we're having a good day" like Robby needed to hear. I know Robby is very independent and it's gotta be hard to make calls for him and try to talk him down without having him get fired up at you, but someone HAS to do it.

I am a huge Robby fan. He is the only guy I root for and I defend him, his do it yourself work ethic, and his attitude, but it is getting tough to defend actions like the past few weeks. Nevertheless, The Glen today. Today is the day, and the sweetness of wearing a RGM shirt on raceday, defying all the critics and fans will be an amazing feeling.
