Tony Stewart & Robby Gordon Owner / Driver, but different (Radio)

During the race discussion for The Brickyard 400, Tony & Robby were mentioned about their open wheel opportunities if Indy changed it's times, but they also talked about some differences between Tony & Robby as owners.

Both Tony & Robby are part of a select group in Nascar, Owner & Driver. They both left successful teams to own their own teams. What's the biggest difference in the two, with Tony leading the points and Robby Gordon?

I would say Tony made better organization decisions. He took the Joe Gibbs philosophy of surrounding yourself with great people. Tony went out and hired the best he could get, with the intetions of getting someone that would be a crew chief. Tony wants to drive, and only show up and worry about driving. This recipe has given Tony success. Now it doesn't hurt that Tony has Hendrick cars and backing. I know Haas had Hendrick before, but bringing in the people like Grubb makes a difference.

Robby could take a lesson from Tony on showing up and worrying only about driving. Robby is his own worse enemy, he has to have his finger print on everything. However, Robby is known for being a marketing genius. You see alot of teams with small companies, but Robby knows how to land big sponsors. The sponsors love him and love working with him. Robby is also very successful in off road racing, which are his roots. Robby hasn't made many changes this year which could be good thing for his team, he doesn't have Hendick motors & support like Tony. Robby is making it work own his own terms and is keeping up with teams like Yates and others. The less Robby has to do on sunday will determine how far he rises.

Menard sees Gordon’s talent in every race. Menard, the father of Cup rookie Paul Menard, sees Gordon handling out-of-control cars others couldn’t keep on the track.

“He’s one of the most naturally talented drivers you’ll ever meet,” Menard says.

That’s a refrain throughout the Cup garage. Many competitors admire Gordon’s car control and how he keeps even ill-handling car from wrecking.

I hope this is still the case. Last years Prelude should have showed us he still has it. If he figures out the POS COT then he should go right to the front.
The main difference is money. Tony has a billionaire co-owner who funded these two teams out of pocket the last season. They always had crap drivers before this year and for the first time in Haas' history, he has big name sponsors on Old Spice, Office Depot, and Army and financial support from Chevrolet. Money allows Tony to hire all the right people. The budget for SHR and RGM are entirely different and so the results are entirely different.
If anyone thinks that Tony Stewart actually makes any decisions for Stewart-Haas, they are very wrong. The Hendrick brain trust handles them all. Tony might get to attend some meetings, but thats it. Tony brings the talent of driving(which is a pretty important thing) and the Tony Stewart face to bring in money(also pretty important), but everything else is Hendrick. Tony wins, the first guy in Victory lane is Rick Hendrick. Besides driving Stewart has as much to do with the success of the team as Jeff Gordon does for Jimmie Johnson. Isn't Jeff the owner of the 48? Robby Gordon does everything, without the money and resources of the other teams. He should be commended for that.

We seem to forget the most important point. Is Robby having fun and are the sponsors happy with the results? If they enjoy it then I am a diehard fan.

I have said in the past that RGM should be in a good position. The larger teams are losing the big dollars and they don't know how to run on a shoestring budget. RGM can get a sponsor TV time with less money. I just wish the TV networks would do more 'through the field' coverage. The teams in the back and their sponsors need TV time.

Who saw Joel Osteen this morning, "Don't have a critical spirit"? Look for the positive in life and don't zoom in and focus on the negative.
I don't disagree with your statement or think you shouldn't be able to say it. I just hope and pray that one day RGM figures out this COT and moves to the front. A top five or maybe even a win on speed vs. fuel mileage or weather. Then he will be a genius. He has the talent!

I think there are still too many unknowns with the car. Too tight then way too loose. Where is the middle? Yesterday, Ray Everham said Chad told him that the car requires small changes; what used to be two rounds may now require a quarter turn. Money will help because he can then hire an experienced and successful COT engineer.

Robby is still younger then Mark Martin. There is still time. Hopefully it will happen his way within his team. This will setup RGM to be a powerful team future that young drivers will want to drive for.
I thought we would agree. I hear current / future sponsors and the team read the forums. Do you think the negative sky-is-falling and they-don't-know-what-they-are-doing posts (yours was not negative) help or hurt the RGM business? We can be critical but we should do it in a constructive way and not focus on it.
Robby has changed stuff this year he went to Toyota..I believe in four seasons RG's had three crew chiefs four manafactures and the cot thus all have added to the struggle of performance. The big picture is Robby's staying in the top 35 for the 4th season securing a next year start and landing sponsor deals all while Leading the score series in points , The truth is Rob's a multi team/facet owner who's spread thin bi coastal and international yes we all want to see the cup team perform but comparing him to Tony or any other driver/owner is only unfair to the other guy.
