Former NASCAR champion Bill Elliott will be back at Talladega Superspeedway next Wednesday in an attempt to break his 22-year-old record set during qualifying of 212 mph.
Elliott will be driving an E85 Mustang FR500C for Hajek Motorsports, which took the ethanol-powered car out to the Bonneville Salt Flats last August and hit 252.78 mph.

Man do I hope somebody gets video, or pics of this.
Cool!! Just wish he was doing it under the same circumstances as he did back in the 80's. Hate those restrictor plates!!
When he went 212 mph wasn't it on Hoosier tires?
nope. Goodyears and plenty of Ernie Elliott horsepower
Damn you NASCAR all to hell! Those were the days that really made it worth following!
Just put an unrestricted cup car on the track. It will hit 250 no problem.
Now thats a good idea, I would like to see that.
Bill Elliott: Wrecks During NASCAR Speed Record Attempt
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com

Update: Elliott was on the second lap of the second run of his NASCAR speed record attempt when the right front tire of his Mustang blew, sending him hard into the wall on the backstretch at Talladega Superspeedway, Alabama Live reports.

Recommendation: Elliott wrecked and destroyed the specially prepared Mustang during his speed record attempt at Talladega on Wednesday. Thankfully the veteran driver was all right after the incident. “That’s not what I was looking for,” Elliott said of the ride back to the garage in an ambulance. “Only hurt my feelings.” Car owner Brent Hajek didn’t rule out another attempt at the speed record somewhere down the road.
Ya gotta love that quote " only hurt my feelings " ...shame the tire blew, I remember like it was yesterday when he set that fast lap in the Winston Cup car.
Gotta love those old school drivers. Just like watching David Pearson on last week's Trackside, he didn't mince words. He hates the current rules, thinks cars shouldn't be equal, they should be different for the different driving styles like back in the day. He said racing would be better. I would take him or Bill against some of these current pretty boys with those rules.
