NASCAR gets tougher to protect its brand
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Concerns about a half-empty race track dogged NASCAR long before Sunday’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the sanctioning body’s top officials didn’t want to discuss attendance or any other ailments plaguing the nation’s No. 1 racing series.

The conversation was instead steered to all the things NASCAR is doing right, a theme that became evident before the season started, when competitors spread a message of hope and unity.

Turns out that the racing series was serious about keeping everybody on point.

The Associated Press has learned that NASCAR warned teams during the offseason that public criticism of the sport would no longer be tolerated, and at least two star drivers have been fined—one as much as $50,000—for comments that were deemed destructive to the industry.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston on Monday night confirmed some action had been taken, but would not discuss details.

“It is the sanctioning body’s obligation on behalf of the industry and our fans to protect the sport’s brand,” Poston said. “Any action taken by NASCAR has nothing to do with the drivers expressing an opinion—it’s focused on actions or comments that materially damage the sport.

How about having some trailer races, or figure 8 races like they have in Rockford IL, that would make things exciting!!!!
as for the debris caution issue...

ban the yellow flag, if a car wrecks it is to be left on track for the rest of the race, there's no stopping. If there's debris, it is up to the drivers to avoid it. Red flags may apply, but that is only so the drivers can drink something and use the bathroom, but then they go right back into their cars and keep going. No debris cleanup, no removing cars off the track, no dowsing fires, just REAL RACING.
@Derrick no offence but that is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard and makes no sense
Derrick, there's a distinct difference between REAL RACING and REAL CARNAGE.

You the guy that bottlenecks the freeway during rush hour to get a longer look at the accident scene?
Here is what I would like to see.
Get rid of the Chase.
Go back to the old points systems with these changes.
10 more points for a Pole
5 extra points for a RC pole
10 more points for a Win.
5 extra points for a RC win
Maximum 2 car teams
Dear NASCAR,

Listen to the hard core fans. We are the ones who built the damn sport to where it was until 2004 when you ruined it. It's not rocket science. It's actually quite simple. 1. Bring back the old cars. 2. Bring back the old points system. 3. Bring back the old series sponsor 4. STOP trying to get stick and ball sport fans, and every other walk of life to become race fans. I became a race fan because of racing. Not because of all the "exciting Hollywood drama and Hootie playing in the infield". NASCAR can't see the forest for the trees. I USED to be hard core fan. Not anymore. I attended the Michigan race in June and that will be the last for awhile. Too much $$$ and too boring. The mystery caution at the end was an even bigger joke. I heard 100,000 people say "Give me break. You're kidding me" all at the same time. Can you say "WWFCAR"?.....Brutal. You're not fooling anyone NASCAR, you are the ones sending the fans away. And the potential sponsors know it too. The bleeding has begun Brian. I hope you enjoy all that money you've stolen from the drivers, owners, sponsors, and US......the damn fans that are the sport. I for one, just think you are simply a spoiled, spoon fed, never worked a day in your life jackass. I can't think of any other way to put it and it looks good on you. I did however, want to thank you Brian France - I've never spent so many Sundays fishing than I have in the last 2 seasons. It's great to be outdoors again with my family..... No more "Gas On!"......It's now "Bass On!'
I find it funny that over the past six years NASCAR tries to make it as entertaining as possible for the fans and yet it's turning people away. I've always hated the comparison to pro wrestling, comparing NASCAR to WWE is about as original as Jay Leno making a viagra joke, but I do understand it now.

Auto racing should be a sport, not sports entertainment. Racing already isn't taken seriously as ball & stick sports are, listen to these sports experts talk about racing on ESPN, they know very little about it and often times admit that.

If the world of sports is a circus then NASCAR is the bearded lady that everybody points and laughs at. In my book NASCAR gets an A+ on safety but everything else is in the D and F range.
I guess I'm missing why this is a big deal. Every major sport in this country fines players and coaches for making disparaging comments about the sanctioning body. NBA, MLB, NFL. This is not about someone saying they don't agree with the yellow line rule. This is about someone talking bad about the sport entirely. You can't have that. What Nascar should've done differently is not make this a secret.

Oh and yes, Jenna has Hamlin's back on this. If it had been someone else, it probably wouldn't have been reported.
NA$CAR - BRIAN F. & USA - OBAMA.......what is the difference?
Someone please use your computer skills to get a cigar in the chimps mouth, and speaking of chimps there was a piece done awhile back about Fonty Flock and Jocko Flocko . They said it was a chimp that rode around with him, no it was not, it was a monkey like the kind an organ grinder would use. Right about now NASCAR is grindin' my organs, I mean who cares about tweekin the friggin chase, it has not even started yet. Get rid of hollywood DW and that other clown the gear rule the debris cautions "that are suspicious" bring back dirty faces and find a guy who will lay one on Edwards lip. Oh yea and get a cigar in that chimps chompers!
Yep, Jocko was a spider monkey. But he rode with Tim Flock, not Fonty.

didnt the monkey pull a trap door so the driver could check tire wear ?
