NASCAR gets tougher to protect its brand
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Concerns about a half-empty race track dogged NASCAR long before Sunday’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the sanctioning body’s top officials didn’t want to discuss attendance or any other ailments plaguing the nation’s No. 1 racing series.

The conversation was instead steered to all the things NASCAR is doing right, a theme that became evident before the season started, when competitors spread a message of hope and unity.

Turns out that the racing series was serious about keeping everybody on point.

The Associated Press has learned that NASCAR warned teams during the offseason that public criticism of the sport would no longer be tolerated, and at least two star drivers have been fined—one as much as $50,000—for comments that were deemed destructive to the industry.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston on Monday night confirmed some action had been taken, but would not discuss details.

“It is the sanctioning body’s obligation on behalf of the industry and our fans to protect the sport’s brand,” Poston said. “Any action taken by NASCAR has nothing to do with the drivers expressing an opinion—it’s focused on actions or comments that materially damage the sport.

Sir, that is not a fly in your soup - it's garnish.

I am guessing the two drivers are Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart
The first thing I thought when I read Jenna's article was Robby has not said anything really bad....has he? Then I thought no not Robby because Jenna said it was two top stars in Nascar...Robby doesn't even rate a drivers card at Nascar.com so he can't be considered at top star....right? My guess it is Hamlin for his comments on debris caution and Newman for his penalty comments in regards to Edwards and attempted manslaughter.
Got to like Newmans comments didnt it sound just like something robby would have said?
love that garnish!
I suspect it's anyone who has begun a sentence with the words : " It's no wonder NASCAR has all these empty seats when they do stuff like ( fill in the blank ) "

Which totally sounds like something Tony would say.
WOW, has Jenna had her hars card pulled!?
nah, she is just good friends with Denny Hamlins girlfriend , so thats how she found out in the first place about the fine to Hamlin, concerning the debris caution dis. She is just being biased.
I thought it was Tony for knocking the racing at Long Pond on the first go around
they said 2 drivers. I guess Anthony could be the other.
I lost a lot of respect for Jenna over the way she handled the RG/Danica weight issue at Indy a few years ago. I wonder if RG and Jenna ever made up after that. Do you know, TOG?
People have a way of getting over things very quickly.
That was very big of RG then, beacuse if I remeber correctly, Jenna really made RG look bad by taking his words out of context and running with them. One minute, RG is talking about car weight, and the next minute Letterman is calling RG 'a fat goon,' and people are calling him sexist. He took that better than I would have!
