Silly Season starting to take shape....Truex, Newman, Mears & Stremme.
Well, the rain out meant alot of free time for crews and drivers. It also means more time for reporters to dig for scoops and hopefully get answers to this year's silly season.
So what happened today in the rain...
The driver most generous with his time with the fans today was Robby Gordon. He didn’t just stop to sign autographs—he hung out with the fans, talking, joking, and taking pictures. His season has not been the best, but that man is most fan friendly.
From the garage:
Reports are coming out Truex will either stay at DEI or agree to drive for RCR and the #33 Chevy. The RCR deal looks to be very close, but DEI make make a run at keeping Truex still. As of today, all indications are Truex will head to RCR.
Casey Mears looks to be close to agreeing to drive the #45 Petty Dodge, while Kyle would drive a 3rd Petty Dodge (possibly R&D car, limited schedule).
David Stremme looks to have finally got his wish and will take over the #12 Altell Dodge. Altell will remain, atleast 1 more year.
Lagano still looks to be the easy choise to drive the #20 Home Depot Toyota.
Newman has agreed to drive for Stewart/Haas verbally, but the twist could be RCR, DEI and even GEM could be making a run at Newman:
If Truex stays with DEI, expect RCR to make a hard run for Newman.
If Truex signs with RCR, expect DEI & Bass Pro Shops to go after Newman
If GEM decides not to renew Carpantier in the #10, expect GEM to make a run for Newman.(Possible Valvoline would sponsor and help get Newman).
UPS seems to be a question. Many insist UPS is heading to RCR and the #07 (could change back to #30 or #33 with General Mills be the other) with Clint Bowyer
Some say UPS could end up on the Stewart/Haas #4 with Newman
MWR not happy with Toyota? Even though the performance wasn't there, MWR was Toyota's lead team (mainly because of sponsors UPS, NAPA, Burger King & Domino's Pizza). But now Joe Gibbs Racing has become Toyota's lead team and Red Bull Racing is not far behind (could expand to 3 teams next year or 2010), and Bill Davis Racing has got back inside the Top 35 and is close to adding another team. MWR has fell to the back of Toyota's pack and is on hard times. UPS is rumored to be leaving, Burger King & Domino's left last year and the #00 is outside the Top 35 (made the race at Pocono though). Rumor is MWR is willing to leave Toyota and possibly merge with Ganassi and Dodge. MWR would loose either Reutiman or McDowell if that happened. Both have been rumored to be looking.
Scott Riggs looks to be out at Stewart/Haas.
Most rumors are suppose to be revealed this week or by August 15th.

Why would anyone want Newman that badly??? He always struck me as an arrogant SOB and very highly over-rated. Yeah, he could turn a fast lap in qualifying but he seemed to have a problem with those other 42 cars on the track. Not to mention he has the personality of a doorframe.

The biggest reason is Newman is very marketable. Look at the Gillette commercials, they all evolve around Newman. Plus he won the 50th Anniversary Daytona 500, he's only missed The Chase twice.
For some reason, like McMurray, a few drivers are just marketable and slightly above average drivers. Newman is above McMurray in performance for sure. Not to mention he's the highest ranked Dodge driver behind Khane.
But most of all, of drivers available, Truex and Newman are the only two with proven track records (winning races and Chase contenders).

Numbers don't lie, and I'm sure Truex's numbers aren't bad either for his short time.
There's alot of drivers that will be available soon and could work their way into a seat or a Nationwide or Truck team.
Scott Riggs will be out at Haas - No word on State Water Heaters
Reed Sorenson - many believe how Reed finishes the season and how Dario fairs in the nationwide series will determine the status of thos rides
Michael McDowell - If he can keep the car in the Top 35 then he might have a slim chance at returning to MWR, even if it's in a Nationwide ride
David Reutiman - if UPS leaves and sponsorship can't be found, Reutiman might be a wild card in the silly season and could end up moving to another team
J.J. Yeley - his perfoemance has not been good at all in Cup and will probably be out of the #96, unless a miracale happens
