IMO RGM is well aware of how the motor runs when restricted, and they are at sea level for most of this race, or a lot closer than they are for the majority of the Dakar rally, and if they can't replicate the crazy high altitudes they run in SA, there is no reason to run restricted for NORRA. It is the same motor just not restricted, and this is a great systems check that hasn't been attempted in the past due to a ton of factors. This will be a big step for the program.

I suppose higher speeds will put additional stress on the systems exposing a potential weak link. There has to be an area in Norte America where the altitudes and summer temperatures mirror the conditions of Dakar. Not that I'm complaining, by far I am not. Rally style racing in April is great, especially with RG in the lead. I'm just thinking of alternatives on the cheap where data can be extrapolated to further progress the program.

The best race for altitude testing is Vegas to Reno.

temp wasn't an issue for the 2015 DAKAR Gordini 1, Broken flywheel ,had the most negative effect on the Rally, IMO

Very true - but there is still the challenge of lost HP at altitude with a naturally aspirated engine?

@Dave,I'll pm you with my brief thoughts

Mike, could you explain ... why Gordini wouldn't start last year ...

Gordon was unable to fire the car again, requiring a tow to the bivouac. Despite being towed, he will be able to start the third stage of the Rally on Tuesday provided there are no terminal engine issues.

“Everybody is going to have problems on this Dakar. I've lost 4 hours, but it's only the second day of the race. I'm not done for yet, no way."

The official reason was never publically stated by the team. Lots of speculation on various forums.

Thanks Bri ... one of the many mysteries ... better left untold ... jeje

no speculation, the starter ring gear portion of the flywheel broke and was beating the back of the block (google LS7 oil restrictor) that was covered in the long ReplayXD footage.

Mike ... Bri and I and the Robby.com article ... are discussing Stage 2

Your flex plate/ flywheel failure ... happen two days later ... Stage 4

I guess I don't recall the deal,sorry.My bad
