STAGE 7 TRACKING

STAGE 7: IQUIQUE > UYUNI

Connection 396km | Special Stage 321km | Total 717km

COURSE OVERVIEW

Numerous difficulties will mark the first part of the Bolivian marathon stage. The cars will tackle it first, followed by the motorcycles the next day. Right from the outset, the long liaison section will mean an early start, followed by a gradual climb to a height of more than 3,500m. Once on the high plateaux, the special stage will begin, with instructions to follow the roadbook with great care, in light of the large number of junctions on the route. One of the challenges of the day could be wear and tear on tyres. Once they have arrived in Uyuni, the competitors will only have completed half of the marathon stage.

The GREEN section of the route is the connection , the RED is the Special Section of the stage.

this is the Silva/ Sisterna accident, then the Martillo hit the same spot.

There's a video of Silva doing a tuck & roll out of a depression a page or 2 back. I'm guessing Campbell did something similar at the same spot as there is also a pic of the 2 cars sunning their underbellys side by side in the sand.

Too bad for one of my Canadians but the 380 is still chugging along.

look back a couple pages,WJM post the footage. Not for the faint of heart

everyone expected a pug to also be upside down, not yet anyway!

Too bad!!

From Johnny Campbell

"Today's stage is the first part of a "Marathon"
Means we have no assistance tonight. The stage started with a lengthy liaison from Iquique chile to High up in the mountains of Bolivia. 15000' to say the least.

The special started on twisty fun roads, them dropped in and out of washes with plenty of mud. Lots and lots of water holes and two track flooded from recent rains. It was fun to have no dust and good traction sometimes. Loads of tricky Navigation and small two trackers everywhere. We started forth and was hanging pretty respectably til my Driver was running faster than I could keep up with the navigation, we blew a corner and went a 1/2 mile out of the way but I made him turn back so I could find the track. We found it but by that time we had lost three to five minutes and I had to get my mileage back on. We ended up missing another left turn and went around a small hill the cost us more time. We hooked up with Yazeed and set a blistering pace and we finally over took him for good but it was to little to late as the Earlier mistake was the Damaging one. There was 100.000 plus spectators lining the podium and section of course, massive amounts of Bolivian fans.

We made a good showing in front of the Bolivian President by jumping the podium down town, getting the fans riled up.
We finished ninth on the stage. Our car as others was obliterated with mud! Tough as we had he clean it up for tomorrow's stage with no crew.

Now we are sleeping in a remote place being Bolivia, in a military Barrack.
Nice comfy warn out spring cot and luke warm shower with slick tile:/
All good.
Tomorrow we race back to Chile, look out as the 3000' dune decent is coming when we finish right at the bivouac on the Pacific Ocean.
Good night all
XOXO"
Johnny
