On the Dakar, spectators get to se the most elaborate 4x4s, but the rally?s history has seen many crazy contestants intent on making the challenge harder by trying to cross the Saharan dunes behind the wheel of a Citroen 2CV, Rolls-Royce, Renault 4L or even a Jaguar.

Comment by Mike Taylor on January 6, 2012 at 8:06pm: you know I would like to see land rover get involved, they say here in the states that they are the top of the off road class, and Top Gear made the new LR3 out to be the best thing in the world. If im not mistaken, they put it up against a Hummer in their "Test". I would be interested to see them invest some money into dakar and see what they can do, I saw one in the vid, just got me thinking. I think it would be more interesting to see more companies involved Jeep too, but factory backed and not basically stock with dakar stickers! I am fairly confident that my 95 wrangler (without flipping) would run better than the few jeeps entered this year lol. I know it prob wont happen because as we all know it all comes down to money! but I dont want to see a trend of more and more manufacturors backing out.
