But man he is almost an hour behind the leader thats just to much he is going to have to make up about ±45min in the next 5 stages or so to keep in running for the lead and on top of that he cannot afford to loose anymore time. I feel for the guy because that is a though job.

He doesn't want anymore technical problems so he is taking it easy until he gets to the stages where he is sure he can hammer it without worrying about technical problems.
