Sliders Pocono 500 Pre Race Report

#7 Pittsburgh Paints Pocono 500
Pre Race Report

• Monster Mile Mishap – A very untimely collision and hard contact with the inside wall at Dover ruined what was shaping up to be another solid run by Team Gordon last Sunday. The crash relegated the #7 Richmond Water heater’s Toyota to 33rd in what has become something of a recurring theme for Robby Gordon this year. Gordon looks to improve this week in Pennsylvania for the Pocono 500 sporting the green and black color scheme with Pittsburgh Paints on the hood as the primary sponsor.

• Fish Tacos Anyone? – Proving once again that time and distance should not be an impediment to success, Robby Gordon will be doing double-duty this weekend, this time in the splendid desert contrasts of Mexico for the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, the next step in Gordon’s trek to win the SCORE off-road racing series. Subbing for Robby while is he behind the wheel of his Monster Energy Drink trophy truck will be NASCAR driver Travis Kvapil.

• NASCAR Goes Double Wide – In an effort to attract even larger audiences to their sport, NASCAR officials have unveiled plans to introduce double-wide trailers in their existing racing format. NASCAR chief Brian Frances discussed his strategy behind the move. “We all know that a majority of our most ardent fans live in motor homes, trailers and RV’s. By going with a double-wide approach, we believe there will be even more excitement during the race. Ultimately, we hope to see the return of the open button-down shirt, tanned beer gut look from our especially wide fans.”

Robby Gordon quotes: “I always look forward to double duties, whether its Indy/NASCAR, SCORE/NASCAR, or girl on girl. We’ve had a very strong dirt program this year and I am confident we’ll be able to solidify our number 1 ranking in the SCORE series.”

Kirk Almquist quotes: “Well with Robby gone for most of the practice and qualifying sessions, we’ll be leaning hard of Travis to help us with race set us for the weekend. Plus, this will give me an opportunity to ask Travis why he’s a year too late. (Editor’s Note: That last gag will require some pop-culture knowledge from several years ago. PM me for a hint.)
