First off this is the person I spoke with.

I don'y have much time right now so I won't get into it all but here is a brief over view of our little chat, (no response to email so I called her and she answered on the first ring yea that's a F'n hint) As you would expect I got the canned answer I was expecting so the next steps are a couple local small "weekly publications" a letter to the editor written in my own hand writing (so I better get some beam to steady my nerves) Any way here are the highlights of a NO I don'y think so I got.
1) she never read my email in the first place and we agreed that I resend it today
2) Union shop we don'y do things like that
3) Offered for free was we can't do that we'd have to pay so I suggested 3 dollars and was told "no that's not our rate"
4) She "heard of " Dakar but ddddddduuuuuhhhhhhhhh......I expressed in a polite manner that was a fine example of why folks need and would enjoy a Three piece article covering the rally
5) She had no sense of humor and to be honest I wish could meet her in person so I could really see this for real
6) I was nice and she asked questions however I feel she was trying to bait me into the direction she should go for her own benefit
7) I mentioned Robby gordon and his over extended effort to win this thing and some highlights from last year
Overall I tried but I think I just tipped my hand to her is all she claimed "we would get that stuff from the wire and "if there was local connection................other than me I guess.
8) Oh yea number 8 the one thing I did NOT do.................tell her to KISS MY ASS!!!
Now I need to figure a way to get some photos if need be for my next effort.

You would think it wouldn't be that hard to convince a reporter to go to the race. Even if they aren't interested in the race itself, it would still be a killer assignment to go on a two week tour of some of the coolest landscapes in the world. Maybe we could convince Condé Nast to cover it - and I'm only half kidding. Dakar has International flair, is a logistical marvel, and it goes to some exotic locales that seem to fit in with the image of that publication.
We would need to stop at "every" table in Chestnut ridge and have a beer to hear all the stories I have.........Some Chick behind a desk Samuel Langhorne Clemens wouldn't piss on is but a drop in the bucket,,,,,let me check my mail....nope she did not reply. If you think for one second this starched.........That's where you use your imagination.........starched...is going to disrail my efforts you're mistaken. Kickin ass is like eating an ice cream cone.....you start at the top. The Buffalo news and their club of local breeze ways (Yes I know I say this now but it's the subjects I want to reach not the court....refer to the ice cream cone thing) any way level heads are found farther down the bar and when it happens...even if I have to call in favors I'll mail a copy...............that's really not "the Lisa Wilson" is it I don't know jack about Hollywood life and falling in love with "the tube".........Yes I like those dots..............I'll rent a F'n Billboard and Highjack the bumper sticker if I have to. ......Or I'll crawl under my blankie and hide cause the world is a bad place and it scares me,.
I decided to whip out an email to the Conde Nast Traveler. I pitched it as a travel interest and put in mentions of coastal resorts in Chile, the Argentinian wine district, and archeological features along the route. I also told them about the 1 Billion people that follow the race world wide and threw in BMW and Mini mentions as a lot of travel publications skew towards people that are into luxury items.
I think more media coverage, even if it isn't the main focus of the coverage, is good for the sport. The sponsors still get exposure either way. And the more exposure, the more likely they are to want to continue or expand their spending
+1
both you and Michael have excellent ideas, one thing I did notice at the last 2 bajas are the cruis ships since they port right in front of the start line. Kudos to both for trying to promote, don't give up, makes a great challenge to yourself. funny I just read this quote "When you want success as bad as you want to breathe, that's when you'll be successful. (wise man) so don't give up.
Kudos to you Michael. However, what you report isn't a surprise to anyone who's dealt with the Sports Depts. of any newspaper. Sports to them is Stick 'n Ball stuff. 'Motorwhat?' 'Motorsports?' 'Oh you me you mean like Nascar?' I'd get the same reaction from SE at the Oregonian. But at the same time, we should never quit trying.
interesting - I have to think that Buffalo is all football all the time. Aside from her not appearing to understand how to capitalize on an opportunity....
how does the RG/Dakar story improve the distribution of the paper? That's the magic. Do any of the Rally sponsors have ties to Buffalo based business? Anyone from Buffalo working the rally? etc.
I'm super geeked up about the Dakar....but, we are CLEARLY in the minority or there would be more than 30 mins of sparse coverage every night (seems like that was last year's schedule)
Any writers out there? A number of magazines source their articles from freelance writers. If you are going to Dakar, or would like to, try to make a deal to get paid for it.
from Travel and Leisure magazine:
Editorial SubmissionsIf you'd like to pitch a story to Travel + Leisure magazine, please first review the writers' guidelines below, then click here to send a query.
Travel + Leisure is published monthly has a ratebase of 950,000—including subscribers & newsstand buyers. Our readers are sophisticated, active travelers who look to us for planning both pleasure and business trips.
About 95 percent of the magazine is written by freelance writers on assignment . Every assignment is confirmed by a contract. We pay upon acceptance of the article. Neither editors nor contributors may accept free travel.
How to Proceed:
Look at several issues of the magazine and become familiar with the types of articles published in the various sections. Please note that a place is not an idea, and that editors are looking for a compelling reason to assign an article: a specific angle, news that makes the subject fresh, a writer's enthusiasm for and familiarity with the topic.
Service information is important to every destination article: when to go, how to get there, where to stay, where to eat, what to see and do. The reader must be able to follow in the author's footsteps, and the articles are scheduled with that in mind.
Please do not telephone us about story proposals. Instead send a query letter that briefly outline the ideas (no more than three at once) being proposed. Please enclose recent clips of your work and a SASE. Query letters can also be sent by filling out the form here. In most cases, these queries will receive the fastest responses.
It is rare that we will assign a feature article to a writer with whom we have not worked. The best section to start with are those in the front of the magazine.
I am going to, once again enjoy following RG at DAKAR, US against THEM, but where are the America's competitors (USA, Mexico, Canada)? If, my counts are right.

Canada-one truck
