I'm going over a short list of what I would pack along and before you say space or weight i've considered that. In thinking I ask why no spare alternator would bolt in the inner hub of the spare tire rim for starters. Seems a bit strange that there would be no spare i'm thinking there is a spare battery ...right?

Actually that makes a ton of sense. With BJ carrying the spare either one of them could use it if nesseccary, whereas if RG had it and BJ's went BJ would still be sitting out in the middle of the desert as RG was in front and would have never known. And if, by some chance BJ's went and he used the spare and then RG's went BJ would have still been not far behind so RG could have scalped it. BJ started right behind RG and usually keeps a relatively comparable pace and apparently was a mere 10 min. behind when the alt trouble started. Rather than stop and change it right away RG decided to keep on going in the hopes they would make it all the way and not lose any time changing it during the special. All of this makes the utmost sense to me. Unfortunately lady luck decided to have her say and BJ had the tire problems so instead of being 10 min back he was a couple hours back is all.
