NASCAR gets tougher to protect its brand
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Concerns about a half-empty race track dogged NASCAR long before Sunday’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the sanctioning body’s top officials didn’t want to discuss attendance or any other ailments plaguing the nation’s No. 1 racing series.

The conversation was instead steered to all the things NASCAR is doing right, a theme that became evident before the season started, when competitors spread a message of hope and unity.

Turns out that the racing series was serious about keeping everybody on point.

The Associated Press has learned that NASCAR warned teams during the offseason that public criticism of the sport would no longer be tolerated, and at least two star drivers have been fined—one as much as $50,000—for comments that were deemed destructive to the industry.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston on Monday night confirmed some action had been taken, but would not discuss details.

“It is the sanctioning body’s obligation on behalf of the industry and our fans to protect the sport’s brand,” Poston said. “Any action taken by NASCAR has nothing to do with the drivers expressing an opinion—it’s focused on actions or comments that materially damage the sport.

Something like that. According to Tim Flock:

Back then the cars had a trap door that we could pull open with a chain to check our tire wear. Well, during the Raleigh 300, Jocko got loose from his seat and stuck his head through the trap door, and he went berserk! Listen, it was hard enough to drive those heavy old cars back then under normal circumstances, but with a crazed monkey clawing you at the same time, it becomes nearly impossible! I had to come into the pits to put him out and ended up third. The pit stop cost me second place and a $600.00 difference in my paycheck. Jocko was retired immediately. I had to get that monkey off my back!
hahhahaaaha, the best shit i have read all night
I agree with the recent boredom in NASCAR. The drivers have to remember that they are employees in a venue where many new employees would love to take their place. They can take their cars and go elsewhere. No wait, only Frontrow Joe and Robby could do that as they own their own cars. Sorry Tony fans, but he is as much an owner as Jeff Gordon owns JJ's car. By the way, we need more monkeys in NASCAR.
This is all very simple to repair. Just like in the old days, the front and rear bumper cover had to be stock. The hood and deck lid had to be stock. They do that and it will be all better.
Now we have some people catching on to Na$crap scheme. When Cup went to the 'COT' Na$crap went to there own 'BRANDING' of the automobiles used to compete in their series. I'm betting NEVER again will Na$crap allow the manufactures to 'BRAND' there own vehicle's.Rumor has it, the manufactures pay Na$crap to have headlight/grille,tail light likeness's on said vehicles.
#39-Ryan Newman and #11-Denny Hamlin were the two Sprint Cup drivers fined by NASCAR for making disparaging comments about the series, multiple sources told ESPN.com. Neither driver could be reached for comment. Newman was fined first and Hamlin second, the sources said. The sources would not confirm which statements made by the drivers were responsible for the fines, but both drivers have been outspoken on several issues.

JAYSKI
Well Hamlin is still just a kid, so who cares what he has to say.

But Ryan is clearly a thoughtful guy who considers the things he is going to say, and thus has a lot of credibility in most people's book, so it's easy to understand why NASCAR felt it all the more important to shut him up.

I'd give a dollar to hear Jeff Burton's take on all this, but my guess is that the public response from the drivers will be a big crashing silence.

Unless the drivers could come up with some sort of outlet to express themselves anonymously, that is. NASCAR would just have a fit if something of that nature evolved out of all this.
Can I give you a dollar so I DON'T have to hear Burton flap his gums?
It's hard to tell where NASCAR's ass ends and Burton's head begins.
I don't like how Ryan bitches about Talladega just because he wrecks in those races, and he can be an ass during interviews.
Yes Tim, it was Tim my mistake and from the fact sheet it was a Rhesus Monkey. But all i want to say about that I was wrong, my old timer mind must be slippin'...............I say nothing at this point on the two drivers who were fined other than the fact that -a guy gets fined what a ton of folks in this country would consider a years pay. Football fines are nuts to, I just can't grasp paying that.
