UPDATE: 2/9/12- A new 2 car team onwed by former TRG investors will take over Red Bull Racing's Owner Points in 2012. Landon Cassill will drive the #83 with Doug Richert as crew chief. Travis Kvapil is linked to be the 2nd driver with details to be announced soon.

This means Trevor Bayne and Robby Gordon will have to qualify on speed (or race in during Duels) the first five races of the season.

#71 team not returning in 2012?: Sirius XM NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody has learned that the #71 TRG Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team will not return in 2012. Sources close to the team say TRG will announce later this week that it has shuttered its NASCAR operation and will compete only on the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series in 2012. TRG finished 36th in Sprint Cup owner points last season, and would not have been a guaranteed starter for the season-opening Daytona 500. TRG Motorsports made a total of 106 starts since joining the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009, with a pair of Top-10 finishes to its credit. Bobby Labonte claimed a 10th-place finish for the team at Talladega in the fall of 2009, while Mike Bliss finished ninth in the 2010 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona. Team owner Kevin Buckler did not immediately return a call seeking comment today.(Sirius Speedway)

for the first 5 races, then top 35 from there on. buying a ride at daytona is one thing, don't see a lot of wheeling and dealing for the next 4,

Look guys robby isnt in as much trouble as yall think. He doesnt start and park because of lack of money, the dude is freaking loaded. He does it cuz he doesnt really care for nascar as much as we all think. He puts most of his money in Baja and Dakar. He only does nascar for Exposure on Speed and just because he loves to race. I mean think about it if he actually was low on money then why would he do so well in all his other racing things. He has even said all this in numerous interviews. Its common sense if he cared for nascar then he would quit putting so much money in to dakar and baja i mean yall need to stop worrying so much.

Sorry Tim, it is absolutely about money. If Robby had the sponsorship (money) to run all the races he would. Maybe not himself, but somebody else would wheel the car. It costs alot of money to run a full nascar race. Start and parks makes money and helps cover the bills. With no sponsorship, he has to run 3rd place to cover expense for that race.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a group bought RBRs assets. I assume both top 35 positions come with that. The weird part is I heard this "new" team isn't using RBRs awesome facility (which was Penskes old shop), but are going to work out of a shop that was used for a truck team...

More info soon on most nascar sites I assume. Looks like the 7 will have to race in.

This is totally unexpected ..... NOT!

It remains to be seen if they got the RBR points along with the equipment. Those two things are not mutually inclusive.

I've always believed the owner of the points (Red Bull in this case) has to have an ownership stake in the team that the points go to. Red Bull would need to be listed as owner still.

Exactly. Dietrich Mateschitz was listed as owner of each of those RBR teams. He would have to be retained as part owner in this new team for them to get the owner's points. I believe that this is one of the issues that caused the deal with MWR to fall through.

They'll probably cut a deal for Red Bull to retain a 1% ownership with a contract of non-liability to protect them but allow for the points transfer.

I hope Red Bull takes a stand and assumes no ownership, they earned those top 35 spots and missed a few races along the way, they developed a quality race team, no one gave them a free ride...

Sources saying BKR bought the assets. Not sure who it is. I doubt it's Brad K., but who knows. Cassill signed a one year contract with this "BKR" team for 2012 though.

Per Jenna Fryer yesterday;
So, hearing the TRG owners, minus Buckler, pursuing Red Bull assets and points and pursuing Landon Cassill and a second driver.
