Join in and discuss all the action from Stage 5 of the 2014 Dakar Rally. Robby Gordon recorded a 14th place finish in stage 4, and is now 4h16m behind. The first part of the special section of stage 5 is 211km, followed by a 111km 'neutral zone', then the last section is 246km (527km total).

COURSE OVERVIEW
After two race days with completely separate routes, everyone will gather together to tackle the longest stage of the rally. They will need to be extremely resistant to overcome these two sections of the special stage which will primarily feature sand. All day long the competitors will make headway on off-piste sections: those who have poorly assessed the limits of their engine will constantly be on the verge of overheating and all the more so, as the region’s temperatures are generally very high. At the bivouac in Tucuman, the candidates for the podium will have been whittled down to a select few, as many of them will no longer be a part of this elite group. For many others, their timing and mechanical mishaps will only become apparent in the middle of the night.
The GREEN section of the route is the connection , the RED is the Special Section of the stage.

sainz, alibaba, Chabot, Gordon, Villagra, Kacsmarski, spataro, all got 1hour penalty for missing the waypoint....

I guess this means tracking was working when he reappeared at the next one
oh well tomorrow he will try again and you still had to finish today to be able to do that

Lets look at the glass as half full. In my mind did blowing 1 or 2 WPs help him get the top 3 spot he had at the unofficial end of the stage? I don't know. Are these WP things making you go around your elbow to get to your ass hole? I don't know. Is a 1 hour penalty going to drive the nail deeper? I don't know. It's a long way to go still and showing that the team is of respectible repute from here on out if not before this latest setback remains one of the primary goals and thus kicking the ground............you know it's late.

The is unfortunate for Robby in that the penalty revokes his podium finish. But in terms of the core of his program for the remainder of the Dakar, the penalty is inconsequential. Robby had a good run today. Robby and team are still in the race. We focus on what we can - and do, achieve every day.
As MK told me a couple of night ago, "Shit! I'm just glad the engine ran well today!"
The one I'm most bummed about is Sainz. I still want his Cheby V8 SMG to win this thing!
