Dakar Rally fan in 'critical' condition after accident during stage one

A Dakar Rally fan was in a critical condition after a vehicle taking part in the gruelling event careered off course and into a group of spectators.

The accident happened during the opening stage of the 2010 event across Argentina and Chile.

A number of other fans were also hurt in the incident which involved the German-Swiss duo of Mirco Schultis and Ulrich Leardi, who were driving a Desert Warrior car.

"Competitor No.418 (Schultis-Leardi) collided with a group of spectators at the 75km mark of the special stage outside the 'public zone','' organisers said a statement.

"Several people have been injured, one of whom is in a critical condition. Local medical services as well as helicopters have evacuated the injured.''

Dakar Rally spectator dies after accident during opening stage

Medical sources reported a female spectator had died after being hit by a wayward car during the opening stage of the 2010 Dakar Rally.

In the 2009 race, French motorcyclist Pascal Terry was killed while racing in the fourth stage.

According to AFP, the fatality count since the event's inception in 1979 now stands at 52, with this being the 16th spectator to be killed.

Robby Gordon finished sixth in the first stage of the Dakar Rally on Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and trails overall leader Nani Roma by 4 minutes, 48 seconds.

Roma finished 2:07 ahead of Spanish countryman Carlos Sainz, and 2:50 in front of teammate Stephane Peterhansel. Giniel De Villiers, the 2009 champion, was 4:31 off the lead.

Versus will provide televesion coverage throughout the United States. A 30-minute daily program featuring highlights from that day's racing will be aired daily at 3:30 p.m. ET Jan. 3-18, with a replay airing later in the day (check local listings for exact show times). A 60-minute recap show featuring all 14 stages will air on Versus on Jan. 24th at 3 p.m. ET.
