Stage 12 - Thursday, January 15

Fiambala > La Rioja

Connection: 4 km | Special: 253 km | Connection: 261 km | Total: 518 km
As concerns crossings, the day’s special is a concentrate of technique. Various types of dunes will be encountered, including the very formidable “white dunes”. Just three days from arrival, this stage can scramble rankings, especially because the assistance vehicles will not have access to the Fiambala bivouac. The Golden Rule is still: “know how to economize your machine”.

Stage 12 is ancient history

Organisers have reduced Stage 12 of the 2009 Dakar by 33 kilometres because competitors were due to traverse precious archaeological sites.

The minor alteration comes on the back of the total cancellation of Stage 11 between Copiapo and Fiambala due to bad weather over the Andes, and the shortening of Stage 10 in Chile's Atacama region.
What they have a sierra club there too? Mutha Fers!
How the fuck do they find out about archeological sites, this late in the game?

Did they just sketch out the course on top of a globe are figuring it for real as they go?

I've been pretty generous with the ASO on this one, its their first time in South America and all, but this is just fucking silly.
Ramses updated his journal... he does not sound too happy about the cancellation.
Great comment, Robby said he could have done the one stage in a Corvette :)
Also explains a couple of scenes in recent video shots (Robby buckling back up, Andy steering), being stuck at a river's edge.

ready for todays kick ass stage for Team Dakar ?
Good morning.. Yes TOG... I'm ready to see that.

First section Robby needs to ride the gas hard to KM 62 to keep up with sainz. The bikes started hitting the marker in less then 17 minutes.
look here.. the vehicle of the future for the DAKAR.

Cool video. Maybe we can get a thread going on their progress. :)
Good morning.. start is about 15 minutes away!! I would like to see RG physically pass Sainz today so there is no doubt that he is fast!! Maybe using the chrome horn would be in order?
Just an interesting fact. On Day 1/stage1, there was 177 cars that started this thing.. today on stage 12, there are only 89 cars left to start.
well that's a bummer.. will miss seeing that bright red avatar with that big smile in the middle during the updates on here today.
