STAGE 10 TRACKING

STAGE 10: Iquique > Arica

Connection 317km | Special Stage 377km | Total 694km

COURSE OVERVIEW

The drivers will be overcome with even more intense sensations early in the morning. It is precisely at the beginning of the special stage that they will be deeply moved by a spectacular view, combining sand and waves, which continues for several kilometres. The theme will remain constant, since the most experienced experts will be able to surf on the dunes which stretch out for around a hundred kilometres. On the other hand, the difficult fesh-fesh area that will have to be tackled at the end of the special stage will bring everyone back to the tough reality of the long-distance rally.

I'm guessing it has something to do with this line in the rules: "They must use at the most an air restrictor of 37.2 mm and deactivate all variable
exhaust/admission systems."
I'm thinking it has to do with a variable admission (intake) system.

The line about 'Clamped his Hummer, Gordon has found another way to bring air into the engine thanks to its inflation-deflation of the tires.' is interesting. It sounds like RG just patched his air inflation system behind the air cleaner, which would make sense so you don't have to run more then a single filter.

It would take a pretty big compressor to dump enough air into the intake to make a difference though. It's like claiming those electric superchargers from E-Bay for 40 bucks will in fact give you a 50% boost in power...

A rule the 302 better be worried about:
29P DRIVER’S CODE
3) All competitors caught by another must do whatever is necessary to pull over and allow
themselves to be overtaken.
In a Selective Section, any vehicle running which has received several audible warnings within a
given time and which has not pulled over to allow the other vehicle to overtake may be sanctioned
at the Sporting Stewards’ discretion, following examination of the downloaded data:
15 mins for competitors classified among the first 20 overall in the Car class and for the first
10 overall in the Truck class and/or A.S.O. priority drivers;
€300 for other competitors.
In contested cases a download will be carried out.

Jeff that ones difficult because it was up to the biker to get out of the way. The bike was in mid stream/course and the 302 moved over as far as it could to pass. but under 29P there is a possible violation:

29P4 DRIVERS’ CODE
1) General
a) Competitors and crews must behave with respect both on the route and with regard to:
citizens in the countries that are travelled through,
other competitors,
the Organisers.
Any impoliteness which is proven will be subject to a penalty of €500.
b) Any incorrect, fraudulent or unsporting action carried out before or during the Event by the
competitor or members of the crew will be judged by the Sporting Stewards, who may impose a
penalty which can go as far as exclusion or allow

So no time but a 500 euro fine

You can't deal with a bike in a river when you are on the low side.

It would be great for the race if PH did get a 15 min penalty as that would put the top three within 5 min of each other.

Fia Cross-Country Regulations can be found over at http://www.fia.com/sport/Regulations/ccrallyregs.html

I'm guessing that Dakar uses these rules, even though it is to long to be considered a cross-country rally.

For reference, the two limitations for the OPEN class, 285.7 and 285.7, are:

FIA ART 285.
7.4 Suspension travel
Vertical suspension travel for 4x4 is limited to :
- 300 mm (see Drawing 285-2) for a "banjo" type rigid axle (the
axis of the differential outlet merging with the centre line of the
wheels).

- 250 mm for other types of transmission.

FIA ART 285.
3.2 Maximum Dimensions
3.2.1 Width
- For 4x4, the maximum width of the bodywork is 2000 mm without
rear view mirrors.
- For 4x2, the maximum width of the bodywork is 2200 mm without

So those Mini's are making do with just under 10" of suspension...

Right, looks like 12" for a solid front axle and 10" for an independent front suspension. Not a lot for IFS given some of the video we've seen.

Sounds like Robby should get some of the time back he lost today...is they give out the penalty for not pulling over. I wonder if we will see any video highlights of it?????

That might make for an interesting ruling since RG may have a DQ under appeal. I'm sure you don't have to move over for a vehicle that is DQed so will they hold off on issuing a penalty (assuming one is warranted) to PH until the decision comes down on RGs DQ?

That would be pretty harsh on Roma, as a 15 minute penalty would put him right back in the fight. Especially since he has been out running Peter on the last few stages.

I agree, that's what makes it interesting. IMO since RG was running albeit under appeal he was still carrying their Sentinel system and other equipment so if PH did indeed ignore it there s/b a penalty either way.On the other hand there is the argument that you can't penalize someone for something that didn't happen and if RG isn't there (read DQed) then it didn't happen.
I just think it will be interesting to see how they come to whatever ruling they choose.
