Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and Dale Earnhardt Inc. have entered discussions that could lead to a merger between the two organizations, foxsports.com reported Tuesday.

Such a union would bring together the Nos. 41 and 42 cars of Ganassi and the Nos. 1 and No. 8 cars of DEI, according to the report.

Also want to add that this is from Lee Spencer who is usually dead on.
Juan Montoya drives the No. 42 car, but Ganassi has not named a driver for the No. 41 car. Martin Truex Jr. is the driver of the No. 1 car, and Aric Almirola drives the No. 8, which has not named a sponsor for next year.

One of Montoya's current sponsors, Texaco Havoline, will not return to the car next year, but Ganassi has a partial sponsorship locked in with Wrigley's for the No. 42.

That the two organizations are aligned with different manufacturers is a complication. DEI runs Chevrolets and maintains an engine alliance -- Earnhardt-Childress Racing Technologies -- with Richard Childress Racing, which also is in the Chevy camp.

Ganassi has a contract with Dodge that runs through 2010. According to the report, the expectation would be for the newly formed team to move to Chevrolet, if details can be worked out with both manufacturers. General Motors, which produces the Chevrolet brand, and Dodge majority owner Cerberus Capital also have explored the possibility of a merger between the automakers.

Truex and Almirola will come from Dale Earnhardt Incorporated; only Truex's car has full sponsorship for next season. Montoya has half a season of sponsorship, and Ganassi's flagship #41 has full sponsorship but no driver. DEI fields Chevrolets, and Ganassi has a Dodge contract. Except Ford is where Dale Sr started with. So as far as Dale's legacy Ford would make a lot more sense.

Pretty sure Big E never thought Ganassi would be in any sort of controling position at his company. Say a prayer for Earnhardt, he's sure to be spinning in his grave today.

It would be sadder had they gone out of business. Which was what was going to happen w/o this merger. along with a lot of people losing jobs. When you own a company, you have to make tough decisions and I personally think Teresa made the right one.

My question is how does this affect the top 35? Two teams in the top 35 (#01 and #15) will be cut. I imagine Richard Childress MIGHT be able to work something to get one of those for the #33 but if I remember correctly, when DEI acquired Ginn, Nascar didn't let them sell off the #13 and #14 team points. Team just bumped up the standing. With the #01, #15 and the #22 all going away next year, you have to think that Robby is a in good shape for next season. It could bump the #84, #77 and #10 into the top 35.
They're laying off over 100 to make this happen. So how many did they have at the begininng of the week? & sorry Lance, I think it would've been better to put the sick dog down. This is Dale's legacy? Outsiders coming in, to do what? Keep the abomination going? It's horse shit Lance,& I'm callin it like it is. Are we even sure that Sabates will be a part of this? I noticed he is not in new moniker.

Secondly, I would not call it a "sick dog" They have good stuff. Mark Martin has run as well this year as he did with Roush the last few years. The other three drivers in my opinion are questionable at best. Truex is hit or miss. I think they have the equipment to compete.Their trouble is not performance, it's sponsorship. Ganassi brings a top line driver in Montoya and he is usually very good with sponsors, which is where DEI struggles.

The latest report is that 75 people will be let go, which is sad but it's a sign of the times.

Sorry, I know you have you opinion and I have mine.I see your point on some of this but I disagree.
I get what your saying Lance. Your lookin at it from the business side of it. I see what your saying about the families that won't have to worry about finding a way to pay bills. I'm just lookin at it from a diff standpoint. Unfortunately theres no real "happy" answer at this point for DEI.
Here's a look ahead for you though. BPS,& Truex are both only signed for 2009. BPS has also been a big sponsor for Tony Stewart in his dirt efforts.
What do you think is gonna happen if DEI doesn't perform? Tony's not gonna have to work too hard to gain another primary...maybe a primary/driver combo. Then my friend, DEI is done. Makes me sick, but the writing's on the wall. She should've sold half, to the sports most marketable driver (& the company's namesake) when she had the chance.
