Crewman from #47 Team Suspended 4 Races...

"UPDATE: Jimmy Watts, a crew member for the #47 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has been suspended from the next four Sprint Cup Series events (until April 22) for rule violations during last Sunday’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Watts was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 9-15-U (crew members must not go on the race track for any reason while the cars are racing or while the cars are running under the yellow flag or the red flag, unless otherwise directed to do so by a NASCAR official). Watts has also been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. In addition, Frank Kerr, crew chief for the #47, has been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31 for violating Sections 12-1 and 9-4-A (crew chief assumes responsibility for the actions of the team).(NASCAR PR)(3-10-2009)"

One of my favorite points on there was the person who remembered Kurt Busch running into Stewart and almost hitting his crew, but not getting suspended.
Any rate, I wanted to get the opinions of people from this site. I worked with the guys that go over the wall, and that suspension likely means that guy misses four paychecks. (Possibly partial, since JTG is not one of the bigger Cup teams despite running out of MWRs shop, he might have other responsibilitiesduring the week) They also dont get paid like the drivers do, so this could really hurt him financially.
To me, Nascar has completely lost touch with its fans, its roots, and the people who make the sport what it is every day. Its a sad day when a crew man makes a bad decision in the heat of a race, gets punished for it immediately, and then gets suspended four more races by Na$car. He made a mistake, apparently Brian France and his merry gang of morons are perfect.
Heres a question. How come no one that was involved on the COT project has been suspended for "actions detrimental to stock car racing?" That thing has ruined side by side racing, is more aero sensitive than the last car, and has completely failed to allow the small teams to compete with the big ones. Yea, I have seen the reports about the Mayfields, Baldwins, and the Gunselmans of the world being able to afford to race now because of the COT, but here is something to think about. At what point did any of those teams run competitively this year, besides maybe Daytona? So the COT allows less expense for glorified start and park teams?
Well done Nascar, the economy is not the only reason those seats are empty on Sundays...

NAZI CAR AT IT AGAIN.(actions detrimental to stock car racing) ISN'T THIS STATEMENT BOILER PLATE FOR NASCRAP TO MAKE THE RULES AS WE GO. THIS BROAD TERM SEAMS TO APPLY WHEN EVER THEY START TO MAKE UP THERE OWN RULES OUT OF NO WHERE.

If Nascar really cared about pit crew safety, they would make the tracks extend pit road and only use every other pit box.

Well I do think NASCAR is trying to make an example of this guy and ensuring it doesnt happen again. NASCAR is smart enough to know that this guy like most people respond quite predictably to a swift kick in the wallet. I think NASCARs thinking might just be we cant have anyone thinking they can get a caution when they need one. As fans as much as we wish for a caution when our favorite driver (you know who im speaking of) needs one, we really have no control over making one happen as wishing seldom bears fruit. However as shown a crew member chasing a tire can in fact bring out a caution. I am not saying this guy did anything other then react to the situation. But he is a professional and should know better ( I wouldnt but then I dont work on a pit crew). There is little choice in the matter but to react swift and strong and of course his team is free to pay him thru his suspension. Of course one could argue should the tire of made its way to the track and been hit there could of been blood. NASCAR in retrospect should of called the caution as soon as they saw the tire but then what better way to call attention to a loose tire then chasing it. Anyway things happen I dont see the suspension and fine as some sort of proof that NASCAR is clueless. The lack of ill intent doesnt always if ever mean no harm no foul (basketball comes to mind about now)

So why wasnt Kurt Busch suspended when he hit Tony Stewart on purpose on pit road and almost took the #20 crew out?

I dont doubt your logic, in fact your comment was very well written. The problem though is Nascar and its inability to rule with any sort of consistency. What if that would have been a member of Juniors team, or any Hendrick team? Chad Knaus and others have been accused of blatently cheating, which to me is much more "detrimental to stock car racing," and has served less suspension time depending on the situation.
We watch racing where Dale Jr can intentionally hook a car into the pack at Daytona, and there is no penalty. But a crew member makes a poor split-second decision on pit road that would have never been an issue if some pin head on the Yates team didnt throw the tire off the wall, and the guy gets suspended for that race and four others? Can anyone justify this?
Just to clarify, I am not trying to throw Dale Jr, Hendrick, or any other team under the bus. I am merely pointing out it is obvious more now than ever that Nascar has double standards and questionable rulings.

Yes I have to agree the consistency is really lacking in enforcement of rules. But then that is the beauty of NASCAR being a private party they make the rules and get to do what is best for them. Which i suppose is sort of human nature. I am sure privately they are thrilled at the prospect of something new that makes people talk. And it has resulted in a new application of the detrimental to Nascar rule. It's unknowable how many ways it can be applied. And after all its really only entertainment and so they are running a show just as Jerry Springer was scripted so can Nascar be scripted and after all they are human and subject to doing the best they can even if its not always perfect or fair. If it was me I would of given RG his laps back and assigned a four lap penalty to all other teams....but I wouldnt felt good about it honest1

To put out this kind of penalty on a crewman might be a good wake up call...consider this-
Nascar has been under pressure from alot of fans to get their "Gray Areas" under control. While people are comparing Nascar to WWE and Jerry Springer, Nascar Was and still is a competition sport. This gives an opportunity for the sanctioning body to address the inconsistencies in their calls. I promise you with the storm of anger over this call from the fans they will have to either lose some "empire" status or address the calls. We see all the safety measures Nascar has used to keep racing as safe as possible...but this was a clutch moment and Jimmy got the book thrown at him for doing what he thought was right. He is a competitor and the potential for injury/death is an accepted risk, what would have Nascar done if that tire became a 100 MPH object in the stands? I am fine with these wild ass calls by Nascar, we see them in Robby's house 24/7 so its nothing new to us, What sucks is other teams getting the blind eye for dumb calls, unsafe calls, intentional damage....just my $.02 and It is really cool to see so much concern for this...
