Areas for improvment for 2009
I just picked up Athlon Sports racing preview. It has all the stats of who earned points where and here are some things to look at.
First off, as has been widely known on here for a while, Robby was 2nd in plate track points. Performance is good there, but there is always a certain amount of luck involved at these tracks so we can't depend on them for our points. Plus these only comprise 4 races.
Flat Tracks (Phoenix, Indy, Pocono, NH)(7 races) Robby ranked 36th overall at these tracks, worst among drivers that started every race. We obviously need to pick up the performance here. Qualifying is an issue here, as these are the toughest tracks to pass on.
(Intermediate Tracks )(17 races)Atlanta, Cali, Chicago, Darlington, Dover, Homestead Kansas, Vegas, Lowe's Michigan, Texas.)Robby is 34th overall here. Only Hornish and Smith did worse. However, I do believe this will pick up based on last year's results with the TT chassis. I also beleive the Toyota horsepower will help here. It's important to get a top 15 program here because these compromise the biggest amount of races in the season
Short Tracks (Martinsville, Richmond, Bristol)(6 races) Robby is 36th overall, once again worst among full time drivers. Once again, qualifying makes a difference here.
Road Courses- (Infineon, Watkins Glen)(2 races) We know that the performance is there on these tracks but the results have not. Robby and the team have the make a concentrated effort into finishing these events where they should. Last year they were 32nd over all in road courses. This is a biggie, these both can be max points or at worst, top 5 points results. We need to finish these races this season.
So, in looking over things, I think the flat track/short track program and finishing the road course events should be priority one for this season. The flat track/short track programs are related, especially when talking about NH and Phoenix, so we need to get that up to snuff. We know Robby can get around these places, its a matter of getting our "stuff" up to par and qualifying better.
Any other thoughts?

Qualifying. Gotta start all of these races (except perhaps Daytona and Dega) closer to the front.

Did not realize he pretty much sucked at every track. I think he potentially could have done much better, excpet for bad luck, stupid changes, and piss poor qualifying.

What those stat's show is that the engine's GEM provided where a piece of shit,and the first couple (token) crew
chiefs suck'd. What are the stat's for Kirk,TT COT's, and Penske Engines ?

Let's see. Since Kirk took over, the finishes are 26th at NH, 22nd at Dover, 37th at Kansas (worst race of the year in my opinion other than the Glen) 8th at Talladega, 30th at Charlotte,(tire problems) 40th at Martinsville, (gear problems) 19th at Atlanta, 36th at Texas, 28th at Phoenix, and 26th at Homestead. Penske engines were in the car from Kansas on and the TT chassis was in races at Lowes, Atlanta, Phoenix, and Homestead. Remember, the TT chassis they had at Texas was wrecked prior to the race. I don't know how he stacked up against everyone else. I know he wasn't in the top 25. The important thing is we know he beat the 47 and 84, which at the time was crucial.

I think it's funny you can't count. That accounts for 15 races out of 38.

The key to overall standings is the Intermediate tracks. The TT COT moved the team up the chart but the question does it work with the Toyota data will not be answer until Calf, LV and Texas. This could be the break out season.

Yes Sir. Qualifying really has to pick up. The summer months last year, Dover, Pocono etc...(Daytona aside) were plain dreadful. I don't think it was down to luck at most races, they just ran bad. Any other year he would have been well outside the top 35 and it was just GOOD luck that the # 00 and # 84 were trash most of the time. When teams who don't make all the races beat him in points it's alarming.
There is room for sure to improve on the flat tracks (can't be any worse) and I for one think they will improve big time and a bit of luck on the road tracks will add 200 points on to the total come November.
